Hello everyone! My name is Vicky. I live in Pinewood Springs ,Colorado a small community about 12 miles east of Estes Park. I am a registered nurse since 1982. I work in a busy Level 1 trauma Center in Denver Colorado. I run the community injury prevention program. I am married and have 2 adult children and 6 grandchildren. I began my WLS journey in October of 2010 after having a really bad asthma attack and ending up in the ICU with diabetic Ketoacidosis. I have had diabetes ,pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea and numerous other health issues which have been exaserbated by my weight. I have struggled for almost 20 years with weight. I gained a lot of weight in the early 90's as a result of having bad asthma attacks which would cause me to be on very high doses of steroids. I was in a pattern of being on steroids-gain weight-- lose weight- have asthma attack -more steroids etc... My pulmonologist had been trying to get me to have GB for over 2 years! I thought he was smoking wacky weed or something because that seemed so eextreme! In October he told me he was not just making a suggestion but telling me if I did not do this my health was spiraling downward and I would die young! Suddenly I was not scared! it felt like the right thing to do! I started the required pre-op diet (medically supervised) that my insurance said I had to do. Went to the orientation class and met with the surgeon, psych and dietician during the months of November ,December, and January. Lost 12 pounds despite it being the worst time of year to lose weight. Insurance was approved on February 4th! I started pre-op liquid diet on Feb 15th and had open RNY on Feb 28th! I know I was meant to do this and am so grateful that I have been given this precious "tool" to change my life! I feel healthier every day!!! My Insulin needs have gone from 175-250 units /day to 12-25 units/day. I am off of 5 medications since before surgery. I hope to one day be off insulin as well.
