In 2009 I got very sick and quit smoking, which was great but everything else fell apart. Always quick witted with the ability to grasp any level of complex thoughts I was suddenly a shell of myself incapable of holding coherent conversations or comprehending basic scientific literature I used to enjoy reading.
I stumbled onto Paleo from reading 3-4 nutrition books a week and actually reading the articles they referenced. Based on SCIENCE I started to eat humanely treated organic meats. Then a friend told me how I was eating was called Paleo (I had not yet removed dairy). That is when the big changes came from reading Robb Wolf, Loren Cordain, Mark Sisson, Gary Taubes, Robert Lustig, Mary Enig, Dr. Mercola, Weston Price Foundation and even the leading researchers on longevity, Dr. Michael Fossel and Dr. Dave Woynarowski (I am a voracious reader) etc., etc.,. What an eye opener?! All those years of non-fat, high carb vegetarian living made me the sick person I was.
After one year on Paleo I see a huge difference in my mental acuity (no more brain fog) swelling and inflammation is gone and my skin looks fresher and younger. My problem was even on 100% Paleo I was not losing weight. I definitely saw a change in my body composition and my bloat was gone and my waist was back but I was not satisfied with lack of weight loss. Brief history, I am a work out fiend. I worked out doing HIIT and weights every morning and often went to Cross fit/hiking or evening workouts while maintaining a restrictive diet (approx. 1200 and much less). My energy has always been high – even as a former vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian/lacto-ovo in varying degrees for 20 years. I always lifted heavy and ran hard. But no amount of workout or varying macro nutrients could budge my weight.
Anyway, I could not lose weight unless I worked out 2 times a day for 4+ hours and ate under 600 calories. NOT sustainable. Yes I tried eating more; working out less and every combination every Paleo expert gave me. I cut out eggs, nuts, and then nightshades and I took Chlorella to remove toxins. Nothing would make my weight budge. Trainers at the gym said they were amazed with my strength and dedication (I easily incline leg press 450lbs) but all it got me was a lot of muscle under the same stubborn fat that wouldn’t leave.
Then March 5th 2012 (my Birthday) I ate 1lb of crab legs and one scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream. NO other food. I gained 5lbs. Probably bloat from the dairy but I was fed up from constant workout and zero weight loss. Finally, I stumbled upon Dr. Jack Kruse. I was amazed at how he tied EVERYTHING I have read over the years into a cohesive, scientific theory that he has empirically measured and even offered a list of tests and what to do at home to become healthy, fit, younger and disease free. I can say that growing up with a genius aerospace engineer father who took me to space conferences when I was 13 yrs. old and taught me high level physics, science and dinner table discussions of our great philosophers, I can tell when someone fully comprehends their discipline. Yes, many PhDs are complete idiots using jargon and circuitous speak to hide their own incompetence in the very field they purport to be experts. Jack Kruse, like my father can take high level scientific theory across disciplines and break it down and explain it to the layman while making connections where most wear blinders.
March 6th I found Dr. Kruse website and started reading his Leptin Reset Protocol: LR this process via diet and food timing to reset your hormones and make you Leptin Sensitive. The basic rules are eating a BAB (BigAssBreakfast) w/minimum of 50g Protein w/in 30 minutes of waking, zero snacking, and eating 2-3 meals min 4-5 hrs apart. By March 8th I had read all of his blogs on LS and 2 on CT (Cold Thermogenesis). I don’t even know how to begin to explain CT, it’s purpose, genetic history in humans and implications for health, surgery, science so I’m going to post a link instead (http://jackkruse.com/the-evolution-of-the
-leptin-rx/). *** Important if you have thyroid issues please read his entire CT series. I see all my Thyroid issues reversing. He has even bypassed the need for the thyroid in regulating hormones through Leptin!
The 3rd aspect of Dr. Kruse’s Optimal living is Circadian Rhythm and reducing/cutting out technology (lights) that disrupt our sleep cycles out of our daily lives. I have used flux technology to soften my PC light based on sunset/rise and just bough blulight blocker glasses for evening television. Otherwise I have pretty much adjusted my light cycle by not going out and partying like a rock star.
I began my LS/CT/CR on March 8th with 2 days of ice face dunking and 3 meals a day. By the 3rd day I was down to 2 meals and up to 1 hr ice baths. I started using an aquarium thermometer, oral thermometer and ordered and infrared thermometer. But this is getting long winded so to the point. Here are my 3 week on LR/CT/CR results. Mental Clarity at it’s height since my college years
All swelling gone. All bloating gone.
Dropped 13 lbs (by 2nd week)
Hair stopped falling out
My eye brows are growing back! (2nd wk)
Visually less wrinkles and firmer skin
Amazing deep sleep 7+hrs (Since 5th grade I have slept btwn 3-5hrs tops)
Everyone is shocked I am not working out. You can see my muscles (they have always been there – just under a layer of cuddly fat).
Zero CRAVINGS (esp. sugar)
Never cold (3rd wk)
Some of the negatives but expected w/the LR/CT/CR. Normal part of “detox”

Back to back and heavy bleeding TOM (came 2 wks after starting LR)

Congrats on your lifestyle! I love it myself. Jack Kruse's blog is one of the main reasons I changed my nutritional outlook, which now also embraces a low-carb diet.
I'm not ready for some of Dr K's recommendations (CT, etc), but the entire leptin thing makes total sense to me. It fits in so well with the insulin resistance and gliadin concepts ...
I, like you, am a voracious reader, and (having come from and being part of) a medical family and background, the science is comforting to me. I also feel as though I'm competent enough in the field to filter through what's real versus what just sounds good. There's a lot of both out there!
We, as a society, have lost a lot of our critical thinking skills. But it matters - and the information IS OUT THERE, if we're skilled enough to find it.
