Greetings, and welcome to my Sparkpage. I am a 58 year old wife, mom, and grandmother living in Vermont.

I am a 10+ year vegetarian who used to eat all the right foods AND plenty of the foods that are an addiction to me. Some people are addicted to alcohol, I believe I am addicted to sugar (in all its forms...sugar, corn sweeteners, fructose, dextrose, etc.) I read the book Sugar Blues years ago, and it changed my life. If I fall off the wagon, I turn into a closet eater, a binge eater...I can't stop until I get back on the wagon.

My first 9 months here were great. I can't believe that I could falter so quickly after feeling such success, but I did. I fell out of my routine with fitness, and fell off the sugar wagon again. After 4 months away, I am back. My goal has been extended, and I am back in the saddle.

I was back, but then gone again for another 5 months. During that time I missed my friends here at SP, but didn't make it back to say hello. I also discovered something else while I was away. In mid-October 2011, I crossed over to a plant-based diet. Vegetarian, but also no dairy, cheese, eggs, and no oils. Drastic at first, but it's a learning curve. The payoff is something else. Like everyone, I am wrestling with my own demons. For me it is stress caused by the economy, the down turn in business, and dealing with the financial impact of these issues. I am stressed trying to keep everything afloat. I am at the point where I am ready to make some changes and be able to shift some of the burden. Change is hard, and this is where I am struggling at the moment. Hopefully I update this in the near future that I have made some decisions and taken some action.

I have been married 34 years to a man I can still call my buddy. We are proud parents of two sons who are grown and on their own, and grandparent to one. We have two dogs and a cat that we are absolutely smitten with, and who run our lives. We love life in the country, and enjoy peace and quiet. We are homebodies who have a big garden, and who like to travel when the pocketbook allows.

I love the Red Sox. I am a pretty avid knitter (socks are my favorite). I am a vegetarian. We don't have a tv/vcr/dvd, but we do have a computer. I am a bit of a loner who is very goal oriented, and I believe that the glass is more than half full. I believe that you get by giving. My motto is Be Good, Do Good, Feel Good. I lost both my parents in 06 within 5 months of each other, and I am probably still coming out of a depression following their loss. I miss them now, and always will.

January 2012 - 80 days on plant based diet. Down 12 pounds. Blood pressure has dropped. Will do my lipid panel in another couple of weeks to see the end result. I have ribs, a waist, my thighs are smaller, and the love handles are almost gone. Love it. Still keeping a food diary and daily weight, but no longer counting calories.

October 2011-Changed my diet from vegetarian to plant based (no animal byproducts and no oil). Excellent success. No more diet, just eating heatlhy foods at will.

Mid-May 2011 ~ Glad to be eating right again. 3 pounds gone. Just set a new fitness goal that should be so achievable that I can't miss.

April 2011 ~ I'm back. Tracking my food and being satisfield that for right now, that's all I can handle. Daily point seeking, friends, blogs, and fitness haven't quite fit back in to my day, YET!

January 2011 ~ My son arrived from Charleston, SC for a much anticpated visit. That one week was distraction enough to cause me to fall off the sugar wagon and my fitness. One thing led to another, and I didn't make it back for months.

December 2010 ~ I recovered from the Thanksgiving over eating session, and got back to my consistant weight. Before Christmas I fell off the wagon and binged on sugar foods for 5 days. I tracked every bit of it, and I will say that this shortened the binge and forced me to get back in the saddle. Three of the five pounds are gone. I am looking forward to a healthy, active 2011 and reacing my goal weight.

November 2010 ~ The holiday proved to be a bit of a challenge. The food I ate was all good....just too much of it. Having Thanksgiving at home didn't help...leftovers if you know what I mean! Did almost no exercies, but planned out December through May for the Run/Walk training of marathon. Weight stayed steady.

October 2010 ~ After 7 months, I decided it was time to clarify my identity. EGM822 has become COUNTING_DOWN. I know this may mess up a few friends who were following me, but I had to have a name that inspired me everyday, and reminded me just what I was doing here. I am counting down the pounds, inches, minutes, clothing sizes, and the years. Thanks for sticking with me. October is almost over. I have barely exercised, but have eaten really well, so the scale hasn't moved up or down more than a pound. At least I have learned how to maintain my weight!

September 2010 ~ After being stuck, I made the decision to MOVE at least on hour every day with a goal of 465 calories burned. Like clockwork, the pounds are slipping away already. 1.5 pounds in a week. Lesson learned! Eating right will maintain my weight, but to lose it, I have to MOVE! Marathon walk completed, and $1600+ raised for Dana Farber Cancer Center.

August 2010 ~ Nutrition is going well. Stuck at 130, but the body shape is changing. I finally posted some pictures...You are spared. I don't have any pictures when I was at my high of 158! Training hasn't gone especially well, but I will still walk the Jimmy Fund Boston Marathon Walk next month. Running will come later. That's okay. I will get there!

July 2010 ~ Three weeks into the month and I am back. I have to find some balance, and get caught up with what's been happening. I am still on track to reach my goal for weight, and am finally at peace with pushing back my running goal. I will get there yet!

June 2010 ~ Weird month. Halfway through I lost my streaks, lost some motivation, took a Sparkpeople break, and had an injury.

April and May 2010 ~ Hot and heavy use of Sparkpeople. I loved it. I loved tracking, reading articles, getting points, exercising, blogging and commenting on other folks' blogs. Exercise was getting better and weight was slowly going in the right direction.

May 2010 (135 lbs) I am getting close to my first quarter of my goal being accomplished. The running is anything but smooth, but I am still working at it. What started out as run 90 steps, walk 60 is now running for 3 minutes and then walking. I have now started to use the nutrition tracker instead of my little paper notebook.

April 2010 (140 lbs) Sparkpeople is still an overwhelming place. I am using the fitness tracker and love the mapping feature to follow my mileage, but the site still is so huge I am having trouble figuring out how to get back to a favorite spot. I am starting to turn my walking into running (ha!).

March 2010 (144.5 lbs) I have a goal of losing 34 pounds over the next 12 months. As the weight comes off, the exercise will become easier and I will become stronger. I am looking to run a 1/2 marathon in September and a full marathon in spring 2011.

My Program:

-Organic whenever possible
-Plant-based diet (vegan and no oil)
-Move, as in exercise, at least an hour a day with a long exercise on Sundays (this is a goal, but it's not reality)


Personal Information:
My personal high was 158. I was 144 when I found Sparkpeople. I am a 50 something woman who believes that one day I will run a marathon and my goal will be eventually be in the top 10 of my age group.

When I am not hanging around Spark I am working in my real estate office helping folks buy and sell property in Vermont.

I love: family, living at the end of a dirt road, my dog, my house, knitting, and the Red Sox.

Other Information:
I love positive thinking, inspirational quotes, and doing things for others. "You get by giving."

Thank you so much for the comments on my SparkPage. Me and this body are not the 'lose it quick' combo, it helps tremendously to see and be reminded that evolution is pieces over time. There is so much I do get out of those books, as you gently suggested I do believe as my body continues to heal I will be able to include more and more -- it's happened some already. Your support and encouragement is helpful and well-timed while I'm still in this stick-it-out phase. Again, a heartfelt thanks.

Thanks, I live in a 55 plus community and walk with our borders so I can still hear weel and nobody was even awake and outside yet.
