I am a 48 year old full-time employed wife and mother of 4 teenage boys. I have been physically active my whole life (ran track, played volleyball and basketball in high school) and continued to jog into adulthood until some foot problems made me stop. I have an elliptical runner at home, as well as home gym equipment, which I have a love-hate relationship with. In the past couple of years I have let about 5 pounds creep up on me, and I really don't want it to go any higher. While I probably don't look overweight, I know that my clothes don't fit as well as they did and I just don't feel as good about myself. I decided to give SP a try just to see if being forced to take a good hard look at what/how much I eat and the amount of exercise I do (or don't do!) would motivate me.
4/1/09 Since I wrote my original message above (which was back in September 08), I did lose the 5 pounds, plus about 7 additional. However, the "holding the line" title is still very true. Maintenance is darn hard work! However, I have found out that I don't hate my weight machine nearly as much as I did before, and use it 3-4 times a week. My elliptical has also seen a lot more use, and I can honestly say I'm probably in the best shape of my life. SP is an amazing site, and it has been absolutely THE reason I have reached my goals.
Well, I have been unable to meet my goal of completing a 10k this summer due to a hip injury related to running. That's what I get for trying to do too much, too soon I guess. I have had to try to find some alternative cardio exercises such as biking. I don't enjoy it as much as running, but it at least gets my heart rate up if I go long enough. I regained about 4 pounds from my goal weight, but I am really okay with that as 118 was just a bit too hard to maintain. I think my body both looks and feels more at ease with 120-124 pounds. My new goal is to maintain in this ball park figure.
8/26/09 I decided it was time for an update, as my weight has been sneaking up in tiny increments and I'm back to 125. Time to get serious with the nutrition tracker again! I kept up with the workouts and water, but I know that not counting the calories is my downfall. So...here I go again!
9/29/2010: Wow...where does the time go? I was just back to reading where I WAS and comparing it to where I AM. The weight business is still an issue, but when I look at my goals I can say I have met 80% of them. I haven't missed the water intake for 2+ years, am exercising 4-5 days a week (also not missed in over 2 years), and am able to do some limited running. I may not get to the 10k because of hip problems, but 3 ks are definitely doable! Even though my weight is up the clothes still fit, which is probably because I now have more muscle weight. I'd like to bring it down a few pounds, but hey, I'm a work in progress so I'm sure with the help of SP I will get there eventually!
October 2, 2014:
Well, there have been too many changes to even document in this space so I wrote my actual update as a part of a blog. I am now in my 50's (holy cow!) and am trying to get back to a better place with my weight and health. I am glad to have renewed my relationship with Spark People. It has been far too long since I have been a regular!
Get and STAY in shape!
Drink 8 eight oz glasses of water daily.
Maintain a program of exercise 5 days per week.
Get back into running so I can complete a 10k this summer..
Drinking that water!
Alternating using the elliptical and circuit training 50-75 minutes 5-6 days per week.
Doing some 4 mile runs outdoors when weather permits.
I live in north central Minnesota (home of dreadful winters!). I work in the schools so am able to enjoy the summers, which make up for the crummy winters.
