I'm in my 40's now & I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't conscious of eating heathfully & working hard to stay fit & slim. But being that I'm 100% Italian-American means that food isn't just for sustenance, it's also a ritualistic part of my family's culture. I'm in my 40's now & I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't conscious of eating heathfully & working hard to stay fit & slim. But being that I'm 100% Italian-American means that food isn't just for sustenance, it's also a ritualistic part of my family's culture. Sometimes, this focus on food makes it hard to prevent weight gain, especially when I'm looking for comfort. To make matters more challenging, I quit smoking 5 years ago, after having been addicted to nicotene for 27 years. I did this by using Quitnet.com. It was this positive experience with an online community that brought me here to Sparkpeople, in the hope that I will find the support that I need to lose weight, which I've gained as a result of: a. quitting smoking b. drinking every night (I've replaced one addiction with another) c. peri-menopause & a slowing metabolism I am a dedicated yogi & I practice yoga daily at home + I attend classes at a local studio at least once a week. I also go to the gym several times a week, I power walk ... in fact, I do all the right things to stay in shape! Except I'm doing it alone. And it's a lonely road. Nighttime is the most difficult time for me & I find that I eat for comfort & out of boredom. I also drink every night (wine mostly) something that has become difficult (but not impossible) to control. Needless to say, these empty calories are preventing me from losing weight. If anything, daily drinking is probably the culprit for my weight gain! I really need a support group, since I know that if I continue down this road, I'm going to continue to gain weight. I suffer from SAD & this time of year is very hard for me. I'm doing all that I can, but I'm tired of doing it alone. I am a spiritual person, but I am not religious. I study Buddhism & yoga, I respect the beliefs of others & I strongly feel that we are all entitled to personal freedom, respect & privacy. In the end, it's our differences that make us the same.
