Hi everyone!

My name is Jacalyn and I joined Sparkpeople back in April 2009. After my husband and I quit smoking and gained another 10 pounds, I knew I was very unhealthy and not happy.

My starting weight was 207 - the biggest I have ever been. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) 10 years ago and it's been a fight to lose weight. I changed doctors and got my medication adjusted. I no longer had the energy of a pet rock! had more energy and I felt I can make I knew what I had to do - get my butt back to the gym and watch everything I eat. I finally signed up at the gym by my house and started bring my lunch to work.

I started going to the gym 6 days a week doing 60 minutes of cardio each day. I logged everything I ate into spark people. After a month, I decided to add strength training to my schedule with the help of a trainer.

6 months later and I am down 40 pounds! I haven't been this weight in 6 years. I still have a ways to go, but I haven't ever felt this positive before. I know I can make it happen.

UPDATE: Almost one year later....

I am officially a runner now that I have completed my first 8K! I am still very active on SparkPeople and have 24 more pounds to take off. I am more concentrated on my running than my weight, but I still track all calories and participate in the Spark Teams!

Over the course of the year, I finally feel I have control over my own life - that my decisions matter and that my husband and I are on the same page on health and other matters. We still have obstacles and ups and downs, but I don't feel out of control any more. My attitude has changed from "whatever" to taking charge of my life and scheduling time for things we want to do!

I think because of my attitude change and the weight loss, I do have friends seriously asking questions about how I do it. I am spreading the Spark, one person at a time!

RUN a 5k (finished the C2K program, just cannot make it to any 5Ks in Dec/Jan)

RUN the 8K Shamrock Shuffle in March 2010 - DONE on 3/21/10 in 55:56 minutes!

RUN the CARA 10 miler on April 24th DONE in 1:50 minutes!

RUN the Chicago Spring Half Marathon on May 16th DONE in 2:29:56!!

    Thanks for the suggestions, Jacalyn. That's funny that you see me as non-confrontational, as that's definitely not how my family sees me! ;0) Lately though I've been having trouble with expressing myself without coming across as angry. That's thanks to the medication changes because I now have stronger emotions than I did before. So I keep it inside for fear of it erupting in an inappropriate way. I'm just struggling with appropriate ways to express myself right now, and I'll get past this for sure. Neat learning experience at the very least. Thanks again for your comments!

    Thanks for the comment on my blog!! As for the pie took years of practice!! But, I just make roll it out a little larger than I need then take the top edge and fold it under the bottom crust edge and it gives it that extra bulk for crimping.

    That's where I got the shirt, and a lot of my other workout stuff. It's all outdoor gear, one deal at a time till it sells out or expires, and you never know what they're going to have. So fun to watch all day! ;-)
