Creating a New and Improved Me

Just when the caterpillar thought life was over, it became a butterfly!

As a teenager I was a healthy weight for my height of 5'5" (115-120 lbs). Once I entered my twenties however, it sl0wly became a different story. Just when the caterpillar thought life was over, it became a butterfly!

As a teenager I was a healthy weight for my height of 5'5" (115-120 lbs). Once I entered my twenties however, it sl0wly became a different story. I began to gain weight, slowly at first than increasingly especially after the birth of my daughter at age 28. It wasn't until years later though that I realized I had a real issue with food. I understood for the first time that I had become an emotional eater and had absolutely no clue how to control it. I tried every resource under the sun from fad diets to diet pills. Nothing worked longer than a few weeks. I always managed to gain the weight back, and those returning pounds brought friends.

2007 found me at 340 lbs, unhappy and very unhealthy. I became a grandma that same year, a role I hold very dear that has brought me much joy, and with it a huge wakeup call. I knew if I was going to live long enough to watch my grandson grow up I had to do something about my weight and NOW! I recognized the only thing that was going to reduce my size over the long term was healthy eating, portion control and exercise. In other words, the good ol' old fashion way. A complete lifestyle change was in order.

Over the course of a few years I dropped 88 lbs and have kept those off. Nevertheless the years of obesity have caught up to me and in January 1014 I collapsed unable to breathe and spent 5 days on Life Support. Turns out I have loss he use of my one remaining kidney ( loss the other as a child) due to uncontrolled High Blood Pressure and am heading for the transplant List. My life is not my own anymore but I am doing the best I can. Taking it all day by day!

So I began taking the steps needed to create a new and improved me, inside and out. My journey is a slow one, it definitely has its share of ups and downs, good days and not so good. It is far from over but nonetheless I am happy to say I am on my way.

Unfortunately I have done too little too late and in January 2014 I ended up on Life Support with complete kidney failure and am now battling Stage 4 kidney failure headed towards dialysis and transplant. My life is not my own anymore and I live with a lot of regret. I won't give up though and will do what it takes to rid myself of the remaining weight despite the health issues. It is the least I can do for myself now.

Do what you can about your weight now before its too late.
Don't take your health for granted!
