Bodie Island Light - Moonrise (Outer Banks, NC)
I have been overweight for most of my life, and not very coordinated or athletic, either. I still have embarassing memories of grade school P.E. class. We were playing whiffleball, and to mix it up a little Coach wanted us to do somersaults between bases. I was such a tub, I just couldn't. Instead of a "forward" or "backward" roll, I just had to lay down & roll over. I think those kinds of things stay with you forever!
Whan I was in my early 20's I found a sport I could play (volleyball), and lost about 35 pounds - bringing me to the only "skinny" period of my life, weighing about 140 at 5'9". Still, in my mind I was always the fat little kid.
And now! Well, I can't believe that skinny period was 20 years ago. Somewhere in there, I started traveling a lot for work, and let my procrastinating nature & bad habits completely take over. Pounds started creeping back on and then some. I stopped playing volleyball over 10 years ago, and didn't pick up any other exercise to do routinely. Pounds started to "pile" instead of "creep".
So here I am, my 50th birthday approaching in June, and still trying to find "me". I don't want to accept being the tubby, uncoordinated little kid forever. I look back at the pictures of the 140-lb me, and honestly, I look "too" skinny, I don't think that's where I want to be, either. But there are some from the ~150-160 lb range, where I looked and remember feeling really healthy! I loved hiking, biking, camping, being active & outdoors, and really PARTICIPATING in things. That's what I want to be! I'm lucky to have a job where I will be able to retire in 6 years - and I want my retirement to be an active, healthy, fun time!
So, I've been dreaming about making some changes & have tried several of the popular diets. Some things would work for a while, but nothing seemed to stick. About two months ago I found SparkPeople, just while surfing the web hoping to find some online tools to help me with a "diet". SparkPeople is what I was looking for, and more. I am very impressed with the comprehensive approach: planning tools, tracking tools, motivation mechanisms, etc.
I've set as my first goal: lose 22 pounds by my 50th birthday in June. Losing 50 pounds over the next couple of years is a longer term goal - although, I confess I'm still having a hard time visualizing that I'll succeed. Still, I'm off to a good start, and having completed (almost) 2 months on SP and my first goal in sight, it is getting easier to believe!
1) Get to 215 (weight where my next smaller size clothes look good!) - by 8 Sept.
** Reached 21 Sept.
2) Get to 199 (a magic number) - by 3 Nov. UPDATE: Make that 25 Jan, 2014. Based on progress to date, and realistic goal of 1 lb/week.
(When I get to 199, I'll figure out the path to the next goal: 183! A 50 lb loss)
Eating smaller portions, preparing balanced meals, drinking 8 glasses of water per day, getting back on a strength training regimen, and WALKING!
I'm a Kansas State fan, if there are others lurking out there.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on my blog. I took the Advil last night and wore a different shoe with the boot today and all is well again.
I will be doing less official exercising and being more active outdoors now.
