FIT FOR LIFE

Pete and I are at the point in our lives where we are focusing on our future. We are working on improving our marriage. We are examining our financial situation to determine whether we have invested wisely enough for our money to last a lifetime. I am planning to retire from my current job on November 1, 2010.

Pete and I are at the point in our lives where we are focusing on our future. We are working on improving our marriage. We are examining our financial situation to determine whether we have invested wisely enough for our money to last a lifetime. I am planning to retire from my current job on November 1, 2010.

So, it makes sense that after 30 years of dieting (in the negative, weight-loss sense of the word), I am looking to the future and thinking I would rather spend the next 40 or 50 years eating/exercising to be healthy and fuel my activities--a positive use of the word "diet".

I have been a member of Weight Watchers several times over the past 30 years and have managed to keep my weight below the all-time maximum I reached in high school and college. About two years ago, I enjoyed the support of fellow dieters via Weight Watchers Online.

More recently, I followed the government's Food Pyramid diet. I like the emphasis on eating the right amount of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, etc. plus exercise BUT it lacks a support mechanism. For that reason, I joined the SparkPeople online community.

I hope SparkPeople members who either want to lose weight or to improve overall fitness thru healthy eating and exercise will join me in reading and discussing Dr. David Kessel's book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. Dr. Kessel is a former Food and Drug Administration chief.
