Welcome to my page. I'm updating my page but didn't want to delete what I first wrote here back in 2008. Remembering the way I felt then is important to me so my original story will be below my new info. For most of it, you can simply add 4 years to everything but the rest is the same.

Now I'm 49. I weigh virtually exactly the same as I did 4 years ago at this exact same time. My sons are now 23 and 20. The 23 year old has joined the Marines and will be leaving for Boot Camp August ...

Now I'm 49. I weigh virtually exactly the same as I did 4 years ago at this exact same time. My sons are now 23 and 20. The 23 year old has joined the Marines and will be leaving for Boot Camp August 27. The 20 year old is trying to make plans to move out on his own. I see big changes in my future. I want to greet those changes in a body that I'm comfortable with, so that's why I'm here again. Not to mention, the BIG 5-0 is looming and I'm DETERMINED to be at a respectable weight AND be strong and healthy when that day arrives in January 2013.

I re-started working on this goal on January 4, 2012. Between then and late May I had lost around 13 pounds. (Sometimes you will notice a slight discrepency in my numbers by 3 or so pounds because I really started the day after Christmas but I didn't get a scale until Jan. 4. I think I had lost around 3 pounds during that time. The pounds on my ticker represent my weight as of the day I got those scales.

I lost those 13 pounds mainly through watching my diet. I did about a 3 week stint on the Atkins diet and lost the most during that time, but Atkins is HARD to maintain! I still try to limit carbs every single day.

I started hitting the gym with a vengence in early June, but had a discouraging 3 weeks during which I lost very little and gain slightly as well. However, I amped up the exercise this week and lost 2.8 pounds so I think I've busted my first plateau.

So...to sum it up, I've lost a grand total of between 12 - 15 pounds since Christmas 2011 and I'm definitely stronger and have more cardio endurance.

So far, so good...

The following is from my first round with Sarkpeople in 2008:

I'm a 45 year old single mom of 2 boys. (19 & 16) I teach 7th grade World History in Aiken, SC.

Controlling my weight has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. I have ALWAYS felt like I was too fat - but looking back I see that I was never overweight until about 2 years ago. I went for my yearly OBGYN appointment in March 2007 and found that I had gained a whopping 31 pounds since my last visit! Talk about traumatic! At 171 lbs. I weighed more than I did when I was 9 months pregnant! I left the doctor and drove straight to the local Jenny Craig Center.

Jenny Craig is a great program and was working well, but the center is in Augusta, GA, which is a 45 minute drive. It wasn't something I was able to keep up with. I am still a member and the food is great, so I stock up if I'm ever nearby.

I got down to 154 with JC by the end of last summer, but then school started and it was next to impossible for me to get over there. I was without a plan, and slowly the weight began to creep back. So, on the anniversary of that fated 2007 OBGYN appt., I began anew to count calories, and by June 10, 2008 I was back down to 159. Then came the plateau. 4 long weeks. I went back to the gym, met with a personal trainer, and got a new attitude. That same week, I found SP. Since then I've been doing cardio almost daily, strength training 2-3 times a week, and following the nutrition guidelines set up here. And now I'm at 155.

I'm going to try my hand at writing some blogs - I think it might help me along on this journey.

I also plan to get some new photos; the one I have now is the only digital picture I own!

My Goals:
My short term goal is to weigh less than 150 by Tuesday, August 13, 2012.

I'd like to be at 135 or less by 2013.

I'd like to effectively make this journey a lifestyle change.

My Program:
Currently doing Atkins Induction. Plan to keep that up as long as I can and then slowly add carbs and continue to lose.
Log my food every day.
I try to keep between 1200 and 1400 calories and try to get at least 100 grams of protein.

Cardio 5x/week.

Strength 3x/week

I'm a 49 year old 7th grade teacher in Aiken, SC.
I have 2 sons who are 23 and 20.

Glad to know you're still in it.....hope you feel better, and best of luck with your boy in boot camp, you'll see a big difference in just a few short months....where did he end up going?

Hi Cathy! Oh dear, don't make me your go-to expert for kettlebells! I'm a total newbie! There IS a great team here on SP with tons of helpful and knowledgeable members...it's called The Kettlebell Challenge. You should join us!

As far as what I recommend, I like both the training on myomytv.com and Tracy Reifkind's workouts. I don't think there's any reason to choose one or the other at this point, as they're both great and very different. I like variety!

Tracy's workouts are super aerobic, and the beginner's workouts focus mostly on just one movement (and variations of it as you progress), but in intervals. I can't say much about her more advanced stuff, as I haven't concerned myself with it at this point.

Marianne Kane, of myomytv also uses intervals, but her beginner's workouts are more varied in terms of the exercises she uses and seem a bit less breathless for me, but still a great workout and does get the heart going. Marianne will often incorporate some bodyweight exercises into her rounds, which I like (again, variation). Tracy's are just much more cardio intensive! So I enjoy both, really. I will change back and forth depending on my mood/energy level.

Yeah, Tracy's system is a bit confusing to me as well...I just worked out along with the video today, so it was ok. But trying to do a workout of hers that is not on video and just written down may prove a bit more difficult, as I don't fully understand her shorthand, and I don't have an interval timer that I can set for more than two different interval times, if that makes sense. So it would probably take a bit of planning to figure out how I could do it, but I'm sure I could make it work without too much trouble. Somehow. I suppose I just need to get a grasp on her shorthand for workouts. She has a book which I should probably just buy, as I'm sure that would answer all these questions and more. She's got DVDs as well, but they are a bit spendy, and I'd have to also add in overseas shipping, plus customs charges...so I'll wait on those. I will probably end up getting her book, though. emoticon
