I am a native of Chicago who has lived in Southern New Jersey for many years...so many that I almost feel like a native, although I grew up in the Midwest.

I am now retired after three careers as newspaper reporter, English teacher and owner of a small graphic arts/writing business. I am now pretty much relegated to home in Millville (albeit a lovely one, in the woods) taking care of a husband who is 13 years my senior and who is now afflicted with Alzheimer's. I do have a live-in caretaker, but still, I am the one he leans on. Having the caretaker here allows me to get out of the house and go to exercise classes, appointments, etc., because I am afraid to leave him alone.

I enjoy checking in with Spark friends and appreciate their support. Just trying to hang on and make life as meaningful as I can, given its staggering limitations.

My Goals:
To maintain my weight and continue a healthy lifestyle that includes daily exercise, the fountain of youth! Also have been following a modified vegetarian diet for many years (no meat or poultry) in recognition of my compassion for all animals.

My Program:
 Limiting carbs and portions
Striving for exercise 5 days a week: aerobics, walking/running, weight training, spinning.

Personal Information:
I grew up in Chicago, moved to Pittsburgh as a senior in high school and came to South Jersey after graduating from Penn State's School of Journalism. Have been here ever since!

As you might tell from some of my photos, I am an animal lover and presently have two dogs and one cat. Lost my other cat last summer due to a mysterious ailment but happy to still have Callie, the calico.

Other Information:
I try to stay busy and focused and keep a positive outlook on everything. Sometimes it's difficult, but usually I succeed.

Carol, this being a SENIOR college we have many in their eighties and 90's we have intermission around 3pm and they were brought in the bus at noon. They cannot eat in the auditorium so we put out snacks. We go in at noon and leave at 6.00 pm so it is a long time.
There are vending machines every where but despite my having to buy the food I prefer to find better options.
Some days I think the monthly concerts are time to see friends on a regular basis . The dress up and they smile and it is all a great treat for most. Some of the men including the younger ones love to take a bunch of the cookies-the chocolate ones of course. I could try again with fruit but many of the older ones could not chew on carrots etc so I do believe after rationalizing my thoughts I will bite the bullet and go with the flow. They come they have a good time and many smiles so it will be the wonderful same old same old. I do not eat it and we do put out Diabetic cookies too.
I am so glad you asked the question. YOU MADE ME REALLY THINK THIS THROUGH. Many Thanks Pat in Maine.

I got a stress reaction (pre-cursor to stress fracture) in my left tibia. This was after doing Big Sur Marathon. Life is continuing, but it is stealing my mojo. 1 month off of running.

CAROL for many people sugar is not the demon the demon is the overuse of sugar, along with many other things. Even healthy drinks like juices can raise your blood sugars . I use it sparingly when I bake. I use fruits to sweeten baked goods and few people know the difference. Natural sugars can work but Processed sugars are empty of nutrients so I do avoid those things.
The sugar alcohols and especially the sucralose give me bad headaches and nasty tastes in my mouth afterwards. I was diagnosed with chemical sensitivity over 20 years ago. I did allergy shots at home 4 shots weekly so I asked to do them myself and some of the food and chemical ones I have overcome others are still there. Since I came to Spark I am off Diabetic medication. I can keep my blood sugar numbers in check.
It is just my choice and others do try to avoid it also.
