When 50 was approaching I decided to make that the excuse to get into the best shape of my life. Ran a 1/2 marathon in Jamaica to prove it! I'm still trying to improve and be as fit as possible for the rest of my life.

When 50 was approaching I decided to make that the excuse to get into the best shape of my life. Ran a 1/2 marathon in Jamaica to prove it! I'm still trying to improve and be as fit as possible for the rest of my life.

In spring of 2008 soreness in the right ankle drove me to the doctor's office and 4 months of boot, brace, orthotics and total frustration before I accepted the diagnosis of 'chronic tendonitis' and decided to move on and see what I could do to be active and keep the pain at a tolerable level. In the process though, regained all the weight I'd lost in 2+ years, and wallowed in self-pity.

In 2011 I experimented with the Nike Free shoes that promote a more natural stride. After 2 months of slow adaptation I had changed my stride to the point where I had to buy Neutral shoes instead of Stability shoes for my long runs (where the Free's just don't have the padding needed). Knee and tendon issues have not vanished, but they are greatly reduced, and I've been able to return to distance running, starting with the Cleveland 1/2 marathon in May 2011.

2012 has been a banner year for running - still fighting to lose some weight, and having occasional niggles of injuries, but really happy with my progress. Ran my very first full marathon in Cleveland in May, set a new PR in a 1/2 marathon in April (by all of 15 seconds, but still-the old PR was 5 years ago), and came within 15 seconds of my 5K PR this fall... Back to where I was before the injury!

Thanks so much for your comments on my running blog--I have come to realize that running is not the end all, be all. I hope to get back to it sometime in the near future, but like you, it won't be the center of my life. Hope you have a good rest of the week!

Glad you enjoy your company gym. What a great habit!! Maybe instead of "gym rat" we should think of a better name for it, maybe "gym bunny" - that's cute, but maybe not serious enough. How about "gym tiger" -- too aggressive? -- how about "gym cat"?? I like that one. But what would you do with all the gym rats you'd catch??

Thanks Carol, yes, a lot of people had very long second half times, as compared to their first half. For me, now I will train smarter in the future, and take 3 days off before marathons. That worked for me in the past, but I chose to try 2 days off this time, and I believe that was a mistake that cost me a lot of pain.
