Hi my name is Julia. I'm 26. I'm a Divemaster, living and working in SE Asia for the last 5 years or so.

I gained weight after spending 2 and a half months in American (immigration) jail when I was 18 years old. 2 and a half months was enough to change everything about my body. At that time I knew nothing about nutrition or exercise since I never needed it. Before I was arrested I was on the road, eating in fast food restaurants for months and sitting in the car all day long- no exercise whatsoever. I never gained weight. Then I go to jail and suddenly in the last month of my stay there I put on 20 pounds. The same thing happened to other girls. Later I met one guy who also happened to spend some time in American jail. This guy used to be a P.E. teacher and knew enough about nutrition. He said that his body didn't feel the same after this either and the symptoms he described were resembling mine a lot, he too had extra weight. He had an idea that they put something in food for the purpose of reducing sex drive or aggression in inmates and this something screws up metabolism by slowing down thyroid gland. It made a lot of sense considering that I was eating less food there than I normally would eat and getting more exercise than I did outside and the fact that 20 pounds were put on so suddenly just felt strange. I've also noticed that majority of girls that were in prison for more than a year were overweight. It's funny how most people I've told this to were not surprised to hear that they would do something like that in American prisons. Since that time, my body never felt the same. After couple of years and lots of stress and inability to take care of myself due to traveling and money issues, in addition to all that, I started feeling really sick.

I've lost most of my weight through fasting (under professional guidance in a health retreat), kept a lot of it off too, and restored my health a lot. This was the best thing I've done. I felt like I've regained most of my health back just after my 1st- 24 day fast. However fasting did not make the last weight go away. So I'm here on Spark People to lose the rest, about 6 pounds that I have left, from my thighs and buttocks.

NOTE about my journal: Most entries in my blog are from my "off-line" diet journal where I put down my thoughts that I want to reflect on or advice/suggestions to myself. These are not necessarily things I agree with or feel this way about anymore, Just thoughts that were passing through my head during this dieting process that I felt were important enough to be put down on paper for a reflection. Most of these writings took place on my bingeing days.

I've finally increased my exercise, something I've been straggling with for a while. I've always been interested in natural medicine. I take supplements and I like organic stuff. Fasting (detox) was a big part of my life these last 2 years. This is something I really believe in. I plan to do fasting in the future, about once a year for health maintance. I want to flush out my gallstones ( gallbladder flush) next time, however to do it properly you have to read a whole book about it and this book is pretty big.



Personal Information:
I was born in Moscow, Russia. Lived in the US, since the age of 12 for 6 years. For the last 4 years or so been travelling around SE Asia, mainly Malaysia and Thailand (about half the time here and half the time there), working as a Divemaster. Usually diving season is not all year around most places, so when diving season ends in one place you go to another where it begins, hence the moving.

At the moment, I'm in Langkawi, Malaysia and will probably settle here for a while since I do tour guides here in addition to the diving.
