My Story...

**How Did I Get Here?**

During college, I was one of the guys -- I drank beer, stayed up watching whatever game was on TV that night, played cards, and ate whatever the take-out du jour was. Trouble was, I didn't have the metabolism of my guy friends, nor did I have the time to hit the gym like my guy friends.

The end result? By graduation in May 2004, my 155-pound high school self had been replaced by a 220-pound stranger. To make matters worse, there weren't any jobs ...
**How Did I Get Here?**

During college, I was one of the guys -- I drank beer, stayed up watching whatever game was on TV that night, played cards, and ate whatever the take-out du jour was. Trouble was, I didn't have the metabolism of my guy friends, nor did I have the time to hit the gym like my guy friends.

The end result? By graduation in May 2004, my 155-pound high school self had been replaced by a 220-pound stranger. To make matters worse, there weren't any jobs available in my field after graduation. Working in crappy jobs for the next few months only resulted in me gaining 15 extra pounds.

By December of 2004, I was miserable. My turning point came one night when I was stood up by the guy I was seeing - or thought I'd been seeing. Adding insult to injury, upon leaving the restaurant after being stood up, some guy yelled "Hey big sexy" to me on the street.

That was it. The next day I logged back onto SparkPeople and stuck to the plan it outlined for me. Although I baked all the goodies for my family that holiday season, I didnít lick a single spoon unless I had accounted for the calories. And, in January I started hitting the gym before work. I immediately noticed changes in my attitude toward food and my appearance.


**Why Has it Taken Me So Long?**

I haven't lost weight quickly and that has been intentional for two reasons:
1) I have never had success in losing weight quickly. It always comes back. I decided I'd lose 10 pounds at a time and maintain in between, letting my body get used to eating at a different weight.
2) I didn't want to end up with extra saggy skin. I certainly don't have the money to have plastic surgery after reaching my goal!

And hey, this isnít a race. The first person to cross the finish line doesnít win. Everyone who crosses the finish line (or comes close, in many cases) wins. Iím in this for the long haul.


**What are My Goals?**

My goals are to:
-Be healthy.
-Feel comfortable in my own skin.
-Be strong.
-Like, if not love, the person staring back at me in the mirror.
-Not be the largest person in my family.
-Share clothing with my sister.
-Regain confidence in myself.
-Be a beautiful fiancťe and bride (one day).
-Be a healthy mom-to-be (one day).
-Set an example for my kids (again, one day).
-Never let my weight or fitness level keep me from doing anything. (Iím doing Crossfit now, so I guess I can check this one off, too.)
-Add serious muscles to my curves- you can be toned and curvy!
-Run a 5K. (Completed in 2010!)
-Finish a mini triathlon.
-Run a 10K.
-Become a motivational speaker/trainer/etc. for kids and teens battling obesity.
-Live a long, healthy life, without worrying about the health risks associated with obesity.


**How Am I Doing?**

Since December of 2004, I lost more than 60 pounds. I have never gained back more than 5 pounds for more than 2 weeks, and I have maintained or lost weight nearly all of the time.

I hit a huge plateau in 2007, and it continued through 2008 and 2009. I thought I would lose weight training for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 3-day, 60-mile walk benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 2008, but I just maintained because of all the protein bars and recovery drinks I needed to train for long hours 6 days a week.

And, toward the end of training, I tore a tendon in my foot. I was able to do the 3-day in October, but then had to rest for a month afterward. As in I couldn't do any form of exercise and had to limit my normal daily activity. Luckily, I only gained a few pounds back during that period.


2009 was a rough year for me personally, but I got back on track in 2010 and dropped to my lowest weight since high school - 160ish. Unfortunately, I gained some of that back my first semester of grad school. In 2011, my weight fluctuated. Iíve always done better in even years than odd, so 2012 is going to be there year that I finally reach my goal weight!

My Goals:
I believe in making many mini goals - because in the end, it's all about your mindset, right?

-Under 170 by MLK weekend {Attained! }
-Under 163 by end of Paleo Challenge (2/3/12)
-155 within a week of 3/2/12 (That means I will weigh what I did at HS graduation when I turn 30.)

We'll see how I feel by then. I have a lot more muscle than I used to have, so 155 may end up being my ultimate goal.

My Program:
I'm going back to the basics -- eating well and exercising. It cracks me up when I think of all the insane things I've done to lose weight in the past, including hypnosis. What was I thinking? I was probably thinking, like many Americans do, that there was a simple solution to my weight loss problem. Well, that just 'ain't so -- losing weight and taking care of yourself takes work.

So, my plan is to follow SP's guidelines. I attempt to stay within my calorie range each day. And, I work out 7 hours a week. My workouts are a combination of cardio and strength training.

*2012 Update*
I started Crossfit last summer and love it. So, I mostly stick to those workouts, but add a bit of extra cardio in during the week, too.

I live in the Washington, DC Metro Area and am in healthcare marketing.

I became a Crossfitter in 2011.
