The Journey Matters

My husband and I recently had a weekend getaway to Jackson, Wyoming. While looking through cards at the Nature Center's gift shop, I ran across one with a beautiful picture of a misted autumn forest on the front and the text "Listen to the Earth... How softly it speaks in the misty, quiet woods." I was touched first by the picture. Trees are my most favorite things in nature. I feel more at home in a forest than anywhere on earth. And I KNOW that experience of listening to the earth, of hearing ...

And I KNOW that experience of listening to the earth, of hearing the earth speak to my heart in quiet whispers.

But more than the picture and the words on the front of the card, the name of the company on the back of the card took my heart hostage: The Journey Matters...

I NEEDED that confirmation that my life, my journey matters. That irregardless of whether anyone ever reads what I've written in a blog, I've given voice to the unique pilgrimage that has been mine, recorded my wanderings and my wandering-offs, so to speak, so that I won't forget that there HAVE been places on my path, forks in my journey where I've CHOSEN the right paths for me. Including this one at Spark People.

And so I have reset my goals and am recommitting myself to lose a REASONABLE amount of weight by our 40th anniversary in April 2012 when we are going to Hawaii.

My Goals:
I had lost 43 lbs. and was feeling terrific. Having gained some of it back over the course of the last two weddings (I mean years), it's my goal to get back where I was and lose the 20 lbs. I was shy of my goal.

I'm not nearly as fit now as I was before I lost the weight, even though I weigh less, so I need to get back to the place where I feel physically more energetic and have more stamina.

I've realized over the last two years that sweets are my biggest problem. The meds I'm on for hbp and diabetes sap my energy and so I constantly feel like I need the carbs to pep me up. gotta get THAT under control.

My Program:
I'm staying away from soda and other sweets. This is a bad time of year to do that, but I'm giving it my best shot.

I've also gotta get out and take a walk every day. Before the weddings I was walking three miles every morning. Then I just stopped. Not good!

Personal Information:
I'm a devout Tolkien fan! I love to read the classics (Austen, Dickens, etc.), My favorite author is Clive Cussler (adventure novels) followed closely by James Rollins. And I cross stitch a lot.

I've had the luxury of trying my hand at many different things. I've been an office manager for RCA, a counselor at a Crisis Pregnancy Center, A kindergarten teacher, managed a small copy shop, and was a church secretary on the side for 22 years.

I've raised two great kids (Bran & Stef, both married now and relocated to the east coast) and have been married to my college sweetheart for 35 years. All three of them graduated from college together in May of this year. Yep, even my hubby!

I'm tired now. Time to focus on me for a while.

Other Information:
I ADORE anything Celtic!

Thanks for the message Calen. I'm not sure my sis falls into the category of wanting to help but being frustrated etc, but I like your mirror analogy and honestly I get a very real sense that she is doing the kind of thing I mentioned in my loneliness blog, everytime she goes mental on people or is accusatory because of some slight it's always the same thing you hear, no matter WHO it is " you don't care about me, you disregarded me, you don't respect me"

SO honestly I think she has some issue some reason why she does this checklist of how much a person has done to prove they care. As you say though, not really up to me to deal with that for her, and I'm not gonna go out of my way to let other peoples ish in.

I'll be fine, but I do hope she works her stuff out, for her own sake more than anything, as this attitude does drive people away and ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy!

My nephews were disappointed but didn't take it personally, which is the difference I guess.

lol, it's winter, it's more dark than not emoticon Ever heard of the night run? That sounds super fun, they have glow sticks, and it's women only and I think they do it in their bras.... wait let me check...ahhh ok so the electric run is the one with glow sticks, and then there's the we own the night one by nike, I kinda like that phrase. The bra one is The Moonwalk, for breast cancer. The dark is when the fun happens emoticon , when I know I can actually run and not topple over I may just do one of these!

I think my body has just had enough rest now, my normal wake up time, when I'm not in vacay mode is 4am, so 5 is technically kinda late. ALL my walks are done in the 'dark' since you know I try to get to St Pauls for sunrise most days. In the country though it's a different kettle of fish, it really is not so lit up since they don't seem to have caught on to the 24 hour lifestyle! SO it's street lamps only, which is a big difference to London's every building lit up and constant traffic no matter the time. Tomorrow I shall have my first run....in the dark! emoticon

lol, as if I would EVER hit you, friends can have different opinions emoticon

I do totally get what you're saying and I think looked at another way the willingness to get back up could totally be seen as courage, some of these things are really interlinked, courage, strength, faith. I think strength really is a bit of a conundrum, as we can feel weak, mess things up royally, but yet display some characteristics of strength, being courageous is strength in a way, so is the ability to be weak. I think our modern definition of strength is often mistaken with, stiff upper lip, or burying things and maintaining all the functionality of a life without strife (but really who has one of those) ie not breaking down and carrying on, which oftentimes is the worst thing and it would show more strength to break and deal with the darkness, disappointment etc.

My defininition of strength could easily be a definition of bravery, or courage, or resilience. I think the bottom line is whatever our definition, we want to be able to handle our ish and get past obstacles, and your entirely right in that it takes different things to get there like courage so one doesn't have to be strong all the time!

Have a grand day m'dear!!!! It's 5 am here and I am ready to have an awesome day! YAY!
