I carried an extra 25 lbs for 25 years. In the era of the "Biggest Loser" that may not seem like a big deal. I had always been told by family and friends that I could "carry it." The photo of me finishing a half marathon back in 2006 attests to that. Finally, on Jan 1, 2009 I decided that I just didn't want to "carry it" anymore, not for 13.1 miles, not up and down stairs, nowhere.

I carried an extra 25 lbs for 25 years. In the era of the "Biggest Loser" that may not seem like a big deal. I had always been told by family and friends that I could "carry it." Finally, on Jan 1, 2009 I decided that I just didn't want to "carry it" anymore, not for 13.1 miles, not up and down stairs, nowhere.

Now, that I've reached 4 years of maintenance, I never want to go back! Gradualism was my plan and now maintenance is my goal.

The 5% in my title refers to the percentage of people who successfully maintain their weight loss after a certain number of years. The number of years varies with each study (3, 4, 5 or more). Thatís why, even as I approach 5 years of maintenance, I continue to log in to Sparkpeople every morning.

This program is responsible for my success and I intend to stay right here. Besides, thereís always new things to learn, new ideas to keep things fresh and new people to meet.

I forget whether you reached Prague on your travels, but surely you must have! I loved it, and will be going back there at least two more times on this trip, if only to catch planes, but possibly longer. We're playing a great deal by ear.

Thank you for the comment on my blog! Honestly I'm not a sophisticated foodie at all. I'm sure I would stick out like a sore thumb on those types of teams ha! We do tend to eat a rotation of the same meals here too. I try to branch out once in a while but we tend to gravitate back to the same rotation again even after trying something new once in a while.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend! emoticon

I think maybe it costs a restaurant more to prepare fresh broccoli and grill chicken than just to take prefab breaded stuff out of the freezer and throw it into the deep fat fryer -- and I always imagine a lot of salads at McD's get thrown out because nobody buys 'em before they turn brown! That ol' McLean burger got ditched pretty fast because nobody ordered them (except me)

After sending you that goodie, I saw your posts on my other travel blogs. It was a great vacation, but I was a little concerned about the car troubles that one day. And yes, that was one big black bear! He was only 30' away from us!! (And of course my son and I were too busy taking pictures to be overly concerned - I'm glad he ran away!) And you're also right about the grandkids. The 4-year old ended up doing a 14-mile hike (and probably would have gone further if his mother didn't turn around). The 7-year old had no problems with the uphill, but his shoes had too thin a sole and caused lots of bruising walking on the rocks downhill. They both did great though! Like your family, I'm glad I was able to pass down the love of fitness activities to my son and his kids!

Hi there! Thank you for adding me as a friend and the encouragement! I can see why you are a featured spark person! You really do inspire me. I'm not quite ready for the transition to maintenance but I am definitely going to keep an eye on that team and join when I'm ready to make that transition.... In a few more pounds. I had one of my "training for maintenance" weeks this past week which is not what I really wanted but I know it's all part of the healthy journey. It gives me a glimpse at how hard I will have to work just to maintain once I do reach my goal. It's a good reminder that I'll never be done. I'll always be a work in progress. A hard but valuable lesson. emoticon emoticon
