I'm a former fattie who woke up one day in 2010 and realized I was obese and it was time to do something about it. I already had high blood pressure, I was tired all the time, and I would get winded simply walking up the driveway to my car. I knew if I didn't do something to stop the downward spiral I was on, my health problems would worsen.
I enrolled in Jazzercise class, walked, hiked, and occasionally swam laps at the gym. Pretty soon, my walks got boring and I added running intervals into them to spice things up. At first I couldn't run more than a quarter of a mile at a time. But before long, I was running several miles at a time, nonstop.
I ran my first race -- a 15K offroad -- in May 2011. Since then I've run several dozen races and found my true calling: trail running, ultra distance. My favorite distance is 50K.
In 2016 I finally achieved my ultimate goal: a 100-mile foot race on the backroads of Iowa (hilly dirt roads). It took me over 33 hours, but I did it! I'm currently training for my next 100 miler on a rail trail in Virginia next September. Goal is to finish in under 30 hours.
My primary indoor workout is cardio kickboxing. It's a a HIIT class and is super intense. I still have to work to keep the weight under control, but I'm also trying to improve my strength and my body fat percentage. I'm not obsessed with a number on a scale -- just trying to remain healthy and fit.
Lose weight, improve fitness level, lower my blood pressure.
My regular exercise consists of cardio kickboxing, running and strength training. Also, I love to go hiking and kayaking when the weather is nice. As for nutrition, I tend to follow a Mediterranean diet: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, lean meats and lowfat dairy.
I am a 45-year-old married mother of 1 human child and 4 fur kids (pound puppies). My hobbies include outdoor recreation, reading and craft beer tasting.

Saw your comment on BTLSMUM's page and just wanted to say:
If you've wanted to try derby, try it! Most teams have a freshman program that will teach you to skate. Most of my team's best players couldn't stand on skates. I, myself, am very overweight and learning to skate. It's a sport like no other! There's no base athletic skill required, no age restrictions, no lifestyle restrictions... everyone is welcome and everyone is beautiful!

I read you comments in the "stop exercising so hard" article. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that you aren't alone in feeling like it's tough to find like-minded people on SP. But, they are here! I see them on the message boards and on some of the teams. I do hope you'll stick around! :)
