Happy being healthy

My fifth decade is my best decade yet. I have retired far sooner than I ever dreamed possible, my life is full of supportive and fun friends both old and new, I am married to my ideal life partner (on my second try), and we have escaped gray winter days by moving to sunny Savannah (after living afloat for two years on our boat, but that's another story).

I enjoy exploring the world on foot, by bicycle or by kayak, and I am an avid birder. I ride 25-40 miles most Saturdays with my bicycle touring club, attend aerobics classes 3-5 times weekly with friends, and walk with my husband at least three times a week. We are also geocachers who enjoy the thrill of the hunt.

In short, I am healthy and happy.

What more could I want?

Well . . . there is that menopause mystery unfolding, raising so many questions, and offering so few answers. Where did my waist go? Why am I not losing weight when I am getting so much more exercise than ever before? How can I be both fit and fat? How do I reset my thermostat?

I look forward to the shared wisdom of other Sparks women who are, like me, trying to make it through the mysteries of menopause with as little disruption to our happy healthy lives as possible.

My Goals:
To make it through menopause gracefully, with as little baggage as possible. My unwanted baggage at this point includes: weight gain, temperature spikes, and emotional surprises.

My Program:
I am working the weight angle with lots of exercise and health-conscious eating. The exercise seems to also help keep me on an even emotional keel. I know if I don't exercise for a couple days I get really cranky and irritable. I am trying to ignore my wacky thermostat for now.

Other Information:
Remember, women, a good friend is like a good bra--hard to find, supportive, comfortable, and always close to your heart.

I feel blessed to have friends in my life who inspire me to set high goals and encourage me to achieve them.
