I was a yoga enthusiast back in the sixties. I was as keen on the philosophy as I was on the exercises. I now teach world religion courses for Thomas Edison State College and have been taking three kundalini yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) classes a week on top of about a 2 hour sadhana every day. I have been cross-referencing this practice with the teachings of Swami Satyananda Saraswati of the Bihar School of Yoga.

Besides doing some yoga, I was never very athletic as a child, but became more active as I got older (the reverse of what most people do). I hiked a lot when I lived in Santa Fe, but I didn't do much disciplined exercise. I moved to Portland, OR and join two different fencing clubs. I started working out to become a better fencer. I then caught the running bug and tried marathon training. I got through several physical hurdles, but was finally stopped by plantar fasciitis. I came back to yoga to work on the root cause of the pain in my heel.

3HO's Kundalini Yoga fit my needs the best. I get a large variety of workouts that offer great stretches, cardio and strength-building that I believe rivals most pilates workouts. The voluminous works of Swami Satyananda are giving me a more comprehensive and detailed knowledge about kundalini and tantric yoga. Starting next September I will be taking classes to become a yoga teacher.

I signed on with SparkPeople to monitor my protein intake. I have hay fever and have gone to a naturopath for help. I am vegan and she is concerned that I may not be getting enough protein. My wife is exploring raw foods and, with her smoothies, food preparation, etc., so far it seems that I am getting plenty of protein. It's great that this program allows me to track this on my cell phone.

Wishing a happy, safe, and healthy holiday weekend! Hoping you don't come into contact with the crazies that drink and drive. Hoping there are no mishaps with fireworks. Hoping you stay away from an even bigger dilemma - blowing your diet. Stay on track; you worked too hard. All dangers in my book!
