The Inner Carroll
I had lost 100 lbs back in the 90's and gained 150 lbs back. Back then, I had been "successful" on a liquid diet monitored by doctors, because I knew I was addicted to food and this was the only way I could go cold turkey. But I never really learned the ways to keep the weight off. In the past year or so, three different doctors suggested gastric bypass surgery. I knew I was obese. I knew I faced serious health issues, but to have such a drastic medical intervention suggested FINALLY got to me. I was and am frightened of surgery with its many medical side effects and complications. I knew every effort I had made to date had failed. I read and read on the web about food addiction, nutrition, hypnotism, counseling. Then I came across SparkPeople. What I read were principles that I knew in my heart I wanted to live by: (1) it isn't a diet, it is a different lifestyle for the rest of your life; (2) it isn't a magic set of rules, it has to be customized for you; (3) don't just set goals, work towards them... Thank you, SparkPeople. I have just begun to change my habits, thereby my lifestyle, my goals, and my mind. Food addiction is my elephant in the room, but God willing, I will turn him into my pocket mouse. I hate classical exercise, but love gardening, so that is what I am doing for exercise.

My Goals:
Long Term: To change my habits for a lasting healthier life style Short Term: Goal 1: To lose 20% of my weight (48 lb) As of Thanksgiving, 2011, I have lost 30 lb and been given one more reason to be grateful! Goal 2: to lose 20% more of my weight (45 lb) Goal 3: to lose 20% more of my weight (36 lb) Goal 4: to lose last 20 lb
My Program:
Follow calorie load that is suitable for my final weight (why not start now to establish the right life-long habit?) New Habit 1: record all food and exercise daily New Habit 2: DO SOMETHING, preferably garden, every day As of Thanksgiving, 2011, I have pretty well established new habit 1, that is recording all food and exercise daily and keeping to max calorie load for my ideal weight. New Habit 2 has not taken hold as of yet.
Personal Information:
Retired. A gardener. We live in the Mid-Atlantic region, for gardeners, zone 6b to 7a (who knows with global warming?)
Other Information:
I am trying to help a close friend on the other side of the beltway in her path to a healthier life, but she doesn't spend anytime on her computer, so Sparking is something I share with her via telephone. She is doing well, and making progress.
