I'm a 30 year old physician (psychiatrist) who has been struggling with weight loss since about age 12. In my experience both in the mental health field and with my own personal struggle, I have come to learn that the greatest success one can have with changing a habit of any kind is to have a strong peer support group.

The greatest challenge to being an obese physician is the inherent hypocrisy many people see in my position. I have had to lecture people on their weight despite weighing substantially more than they do. I know all the theory and could teach a course in nutrition / diet / exercise physiology etc. and yet it is the WILL to change that has always eluded me. It seems like a touch of insanity to continue the lifestyle that has caused me such pain, and yet something so deep and ingrained continues to drive me back and back again. I have had success in the past with losing substantial amounts of weight, but this yo-yo pattern is both frustrating and taxing on my wardrobe.

The havoc my weight has played on every aspect of my life has driven me not so much to depression, but to frustration and anger. I need the synergy that a combination of wills can offer. I need the camaraderie. I have always preferred the company of other large people in order to minimize the social impact my weight presented- and now I think I can turn that same preference to the direction of improvement rather than mere acceptance.

I have so many goals and dreams that I can only achieve through greater fitness. With every birthday and every New Years, I reflect back on the previous 12 months and wonder how things could have been different if I had taken the right path the same date a year prior. Time isn't slowing down. I'm not getting any younger.

My Goals:
My ideal weight is around 180 lbs. I would like to get back into martial arts and use it to maintain a healthy lifestyle once I reach my goal weight. I have a very specific pair of "kicking jeans," size 42, that I haven't been able to wear in about 8 years.

My Program:
I am not following any particular commercial diet plan- I am using simple math of "calories in, calories out." I am trying to maintain an intake of about 1000-1200 calories consisting of mostly lean protein with some protein powder supplementation, daily vitamins, green tea, several servings of low-sugar veggies.

Exercise: I am a member of Planet Fitness and have been a fan of the elliptical machine for many years. I am trying (key word) to attend 4-5 times per week at 40-60 min per session. I will be integrating resistance training and stretching for flexibility as time goes on. I have a heavy bag in my basement and look forward to building some stamina so I can do some freestyle bag work as well.

Personal Information:
My name is Patrick, I'm a 30 year old physician finishing up the last few years of residency in child psychiatry. I have been overweight since about age 12 after a period of being grossly underweight. I am about 35 lbs lighter than my heaviest which was 2 years ago, but am still hovering in the 350 lb range. I have a passion for martial arts and have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do earned back in college, but have lost the majority of my skill in a haze of pizza and Chinese buffets.
