Behaving My Way to Better Health

I'm working at losing weight to better my health. Looking better will just be icing on the cake (which I'm trying hard not to eat!).

As a young adult, I wore a size 12, and kept my weight pretty much between 120 and 130 pounds, but once I hit my mid-30's I started gaining weight, and needing the next size up about every seven to nine years. Could be that my love of bread, meat and potatoes/pasta/rice/pizza, desserts, Pepsi and chocolate milk ... and my loathing for exercise had ...

As a young adult, I wore a size 12, and kept my weight pretty much between 120 and 130 pounds, but once I hit my mid-30's I started gaining weight, and needing the next size up about every seven to nine years. Could be that my love of bread, meat and potatoes/pasta/rice/pizza, desserts, Pepsi and chocolate milk ... and my loathing for exercise had something to do with the weight gain!! (My idea of exercise is turning pages of my books and magazines as I read!)

By about 2006, size 18's were starting to feel very snug, and the scale hit 209 pounds. I really worked at weight loss, and had just finally gotten down to 187 pounds on February 14, 2009, when my heart went off the tracks ... atrial fibrillation and tachycardia that put me in the hospital. After four days, they got things back to normal, and I was diagnosed with Grave's disease (hyperthyroid). Wouldn't you know, I was one of the few that DIDN'T get unexpected weight loss as a symptom! I was put on meds to destroy my thyroid, and the doctor said, "As the thyroid loses function, your weight will increase." And, boy, was he right! Within less than six months, I was back up to 200 pounds. I've managed to keep it from going higher, but losing is incredibly hard!

I know exercise is vital, but I can't do anything that makes me feel hot (especially hot enough to sweat!), because when I get hot, the psoriasis flares. And it can break out in some very inconvenient, uncomfortable places!! So I walk (more of a stroll, really), stretch, do tai chi and easy yoga, and very brief sessions of weight lifting.

I've read that lack of sleep can mess up your body and cause weight gain, and I believe it! I've had insomnia for years ... at least since my mid-20's, and I'm sure that has contributed to the problem. One of my goals is to get at least five to six hours of straight sleep. Seven to eight hours would be heaven!

I've been trying to deal with all of this alone, and feel so grateful to have found Sparkpeople. The support and encouragement here are wonderful, and give me some real hope that I can make the changes I need to make to live a longer and healthier life.

So, THANKS for being here!!

Here's a little motivation for you.....

October has finally arrived! A new month for new and exciting adventures, experiences, and opportunities. The seasons are changing. Look at ways you can stay active and motivate you though it's getting colder out. Even post motivational sayings and pictures around the house if that helps. People tend to be less active during the colder months, I certainly am one of them. One of my goals for this year is to find things to keep me active and motivated, not to lose that Spark but to keep that Spark glowing strong! Together we can do this! emoticon emoticon emoticon
