NEW BEGINNINGS

I am not new to Spark People. I just fell off the wagon as so many times before. I have 3 family weddings to go to in the next 10 months. The first one is in August. I want to be lighter than I am now and back on the right track again.

I wish I could share some emoticon emoticon with you. It has been raining all day. Loving it!!! We've had about 6 inches since May. But then we hadn't had any since last July before May. I guess you could say it is showers of blessings! emoticon

Sounds like you have it under control. Me? I'm still learning. How do I get protein without eating so much dairy?? I've been using Fiber One cereal but it has aspartame, and I'd like to find another kind of easy to use fiber without the sweetener. emoticon Do you use Atkin's or South Beach bars and such?

Hi Ginny,

I've been learning more about a hypothyroid diet. Mary Shomon has a few rules that I've been following. If you have a library close by you might check out Mary's books ... How to Live Well With Hypothyroidism and The Thyroid Diet Revolution. I think they are excellent.

I've learned a lot about the whys and wherefores of food and how it affects our bodies. It's been very interesting. Even exercise - nothing that is too stressful for the body as stress of any kind works against the thyroid, so don't work out for hours a day or do exercise that seems stressful to you - makes you extra tired or hurts.

Some rules she suggests are:
Eat protein with nonstarchy vegetables
Avoid milk and meat at the same meal (digestion)
Eat one type of protein per meal - don't combine proteins unless it is with eggs
Don't eat fruit with meat or heavy meals (digestion)

She says no one diet does the trick for everybody. You have to find the diet that works for you. I looked over Atkin's, and it was too restrictive for me. I'm going to look at the South Beach book I have coming to see if it might work. What I'm doing now is ...

Around 1500 calories a day:
105 g protein (525 calories)
50 g Fat (450 calories)
130 g Carbs (520 calories)
She suggests 1 to 2 pieces of fruit only - berries are the best
No sugar and no sugar substitutes except for Stevia or Truvia - doesn't raise insulin levels

I'm finding it hard to get all the protein and the fiber. I'm thinking about getting some protein and fiber supplements.
I don't get hungry. emoticon I'm also drinking anywhere from 12-16 cups of water a day. With the added fiber, I need more water.
