120 lbs gone!! IT'S ALL ABOUT MAINTENANCE...GETTING THERE AND STAYING THERE!! :)

Hello everybody..My name is Carol and welcome to my Sparkpage! What a journey it has been!! On March 2, 2010 I weighed 240+ lbs. I found myself at 55 years of age lying in CCU in a hospital. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, & was stressed to the max. Luckily my heart was okay, but my cardiologist questioned where I would be in 10 years if I didn't drastically change my life!! Upon my release, I decided it was time to take control of my life. I immediately started on a journey ...
I immediately started on a journey to develop a healthy lifestyle, & I was determined nothing was going to stop me from reaching my goal!! I started walking for exercise, & watching what I ate by counting calories and trying to eat a healthy, balanced diet. All went well & by August 2010, I had lost a total of 35 lbs....but something seemed to be missing! While I had the support of family & friends, for the most part I felt that I was alone on my journey. That is until my doctor recommended I check out the website called Sparkpeople.com!! It changed my life!! Never before had I experienced the support & resources that I have found here. 10 months after joining Sparks, in April of 2011, I met my ultimate goal. . I have reached my goal weight and now have a normal BMI. My blood pressure is normal, and cholesterol has been lowered! I continued into the maintenance phase of my journey with my feet firmly planted in Sparkpeople, & with all my wonderful Sparkfriends at my side!! I have successfully maintained my weight loss for over 2 years!! For me this is probably the most important and difficult part of my journey! I now must break the vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting that I have dealt with most of my adult life! This time, with the help of Sparkpeople, I will win the battle! 120 lbs later.... GOODBYE YO-YO DIETER....you are OUTTA HERE!! Thank you sparkpeople for giving me my life back!!

Personal Information:
I'm a 58 year old female from America's heartland--Kansas. I have been employed in the aircraft industry for the past 21 years. Always an animal lover I am the proud mama to a Chug, & 2 Japanese Chins. I have no children, am not married, but have a partner who I have been with for the
past 28 years.

Other Information:
This is how I Ifound Spark people. I woke up in a hospital bed in CCU in March of 2010, hospitilized for chest pains. I weighed 230+lbs, had high cholesteral & high blood pressure. Luckily my heart was okay & I was diagnosed with stress which caused the chest pains. My doctors advised me to lose weight & get active. Being in CCU was the most humiliating experience of my life.. You don't put a 240 lb person on a bed pan with good results!! I was determined to do whatever it took to prevent ending up in that place again. Upon being released from the hospital I immediately started walking for exercise & watching my calories, sodium, & fat intake. At a doctors appointment in August 2010 I had lost 40 lbs, but it was hard sustaining the enthusiasm & determination I had upon my initial release from the hospital. My Dr. told me about the web site for Spark people & here I am. I look forward to a long wonderful relationship with Spark people!!

“Courage is not the absence of despair; it is, rather the capacity to move ahead in spite of despair.”
—Rollo May

Some days we wake up to overwhelming feelings that things look bleak. We see loss and danger around us, and we fear for the future. That is when our character is most tested. That is when we are called to continue to just put one foot in front of the other. There is no need to solve all our problems right away or to change the world immediately. Courage isn’t necessarily a feeling of confidence that we can triumph over all odds. It’s knowing that we can move ahead one step at a time, and it’s taking positive action in the face of our fears.
Each day we can do small things that are constructive. By these small things, we can place ourselves on the positive side of life’s equation. We can put our weight where we want to go. That is courage.
Today, in the face of my despair, I will focus my efforts on the side of my hopes and values

I just wanted to share my morning devotions with you today, emoticon emoticon emoticon

When you make a change, you make a difference.

emoticon Every transformation starts a dream.

emoticon Goals give you the ability to be self-directed and in control.

emoticon You have the power to change, and no one can take that
away!

emoticon Life gives you the choice...either learn to overcome
challenges or succumb to them.

power to change.

Happy Saturday Greetings to you, Carol!
I'm fairly new to SP; got online to update my tracker this morning and stumbled upon your story. I want you to know how much it moved + inspired me! WOW! I need to print out your story + carry it with me. The connection I found in our stories is that mine too is health related -- a recent diagnosis of Diabetes scared me into action. I've set up goals for myself, several DOs + some DON'Ts, and at the end of 3 weeks I am making progress. I haven't been perfect but doing better each day - eating better and exercising more. Thank you so much for sharing your story + for being a bright star for me this morning. emoticon

Sometimes the healthiest thing I can do for myself is to admit that I am not perfect. I am human. I make mistakes. Today I will have the courage to look the truth in the face, admit my errors and achievements, appreciate my growth. and make amends where I have done harm. I will not attempt to manage or control what is beyond my powers. I will dedicate myself to managing my own life, and only mine.

There is only one corner of the world you can be sure of improving.and that is your own self.

As I look at my fitness, nutrition and personal goals, I seek progress not perfection. I admit I am not perfect, but I am making positive changes and I rejoice in my growth as I seek to eliminate my character defects. Strength comes from facing adversity and not giving in, not surrendering, not giving up.
