Skating to Better Health! I'm working to score this goal!

During the last half of 2010, my focus was not exactly where it should have been and I went off track. It's so easy when you've had a life-long problem with food.

My focus took a change when I partially tore my MCL during a hockey game last July. I had to be off the ice for 8 weeks! I was devastated by this as I so enjoy playing hockey. This was when my eating patterns changed and I got off track. I was upset and I ate whatever I wanted. I never was able to get back on that path to eating right. I since have gained back more than I EVER wanted. Well, I'm ready to get back in the game! I'm still playing hockey and loving every minute of it! Now I need to love me more and get back into the game of health. Life does have it's ups and downs but I just wish this wasn't so hard for me. I often ask myself why I can't have the control that others do? It takes practice and I guess with more practice, you get better and better. I'm trying to realize my weaknesses and learn how to deal with them. So, with a new year, comes another beginning......one where I will practice and score those goals along the way! With Sparkpeople on my team, I have the strategies I need to WIN!

June 2010
It's been 6 months since I've written my introduction, so I suppose it is time for an update.
I'm happy to say, that I have "SCORED" my original goal of 145 pounds! I never thought I'd be able to accomplish this, but I have. I honestly do not ever remember weighing under 151 pounds.

I could not have done this without Sparkpeople! This site, along with all my Spark Buddies and Spark Teams have given me the incentive I needed to get where I am today. Thank you so much to everyone!!!!

My other incentive has definitely been playing ice hockey. I am currently playing on two women's teams including one league team. I also play with two pick-up groups. I am on the ice about 4 days a week and will be participating in a puck handling/skills clinic this summer. Ice hockey is an activity that has become my passion. This has encouraged me to eat well, get fit and stay healthy so that I can play as well as I can and for as long as my body will allow. Find an activity you are passionate about and that will give you the motivation to continue. How can you continue something that you do not like?

Where do I go from here? I'm going where my body takes me. I have not set a new goal weight for myself (although this page forced me to before saving my changes), but will continue to track my calories and stay within the allotted range. If I lose more weight, then fine, I'll certainly take it! I try to eat whole foods and stay away from most processed items. I read ingredient labels carefully staying away from artificial sweeteners, colors and flavors, high fructose corn syrup, ingredients I can't read, try to eat whole grains and have to have my chocolate. I'm not perfect and don't expect to be. There are days that I won't care, but that's okay. I think I've learned to get back on track......I hope! The old me is still within and like an alcoholic, I need to always be aware of that.

I've learned so much on this journey and I think I'm beginning to understand who I really am. It's been a time of self-discovery. You MUST do this for yourself--no one else. I tried to lose weight before for my daughter's wedding and couldn't do it. You have to want to do this and not because someone else wants you to. Make it a game, make it an obsession, make it your passion, but most importantly, make it your life and you will succeed too!

December 2009
My name is Claire and I've been overweight most of my life. I can gain and lose the same 50 pounds and I have had enough! I want this time to be the last. I've lost about 40 pounds over this past year and have about another 20 more to go. I've discovered that I don't like exercise like walking on a treadmill, lifting weights or doing sit-ups. It's boring!!! I needed something that I could be passionate about and I've discovered that my passion is ice skating! I have always enjoyed skating as a child and played ice hockey until the age of 16. I was on one of the first girls' hockey teams in the area! I skated some as my children grew up but didn't skate regularly. For the past two years, I have rediscovered skating again. As of September 2009, I now play on two women's hockey teams and I love it!! This has given me the incentive to get fit so that I can try to keep up with the 20 year olds! (Notice I said TRY.........) Find something you are passionate about and you will be on your way to a better and healthier you too!

Personal Information:
I am a Mom to 3 wonderful children who have all grown up so fast! I also became a grandmother last year. My grandson is such a joy and makes me smile all the time!

I'm a pretty independent person and like to learn to do things myself. I'm curious about how things work and fix things when I can.

I am an elementary art teacher. Thus my name: artchr. I particularly enjoy drawing, pen and ink, prismacolors and pastels. I also like to work with wood. I've been considering doing something with photography lately as I have really enjoyed this art form. I like to capture moments in my grandson's life but also like unusal aspects and angles of objects and nature. Maine is a wonderful place to photograph!

“Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it.”

“I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

"I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter."

Claire,
Thank you for the peace sign. I am working on peace in my life. I am taking many of the things you said in your e-mail to heart, too. You are a great SparkBuddy and continue to help me on my journeys in life.

Thanks for the smiley face goodie and especially for the reminder to smile more. I get very focused and serious at work sometimes and walk the halls like a "woman on a mission" instead of a smiling co-worker. I am going to work on smiling more and being the first to greet others.

Thanks for the sunglasses, Claire! We have had a fantastic weekend with gorgeous weather. Heading back to Georgia around noonish. Back to school with recharged batteries tomorrow. One of the highlights of this weekend was that on Saturday we went to the University of West Florida which is where I earned my BA and M.Ed degrees. My brother-in-law works there now. They had a tour of the camellia garden that has been established by the Pensacola Camellia Club and UWF Retired Teachers. One of the most influential professors I ever had in my bachelor's program is both a retired professor and a lover of camellias. He was there and seeing him was wonderful. It reminded me again why I am in education and to get beyond the politics, bureaucracy, and just plain BS to just do what I love and am good at with a passion every day because that is what this professor did when he was teaching and he now does in his volunteer work. It's hard to put into words the effect seeing him again had on me!
