Last August 2007, my sister called me and said that she really wanted to try and do a half marathon; and asked me if I would do it with her. I was like" What? Are you kidding me?" Neither of us have been runners...ever. I seriously thought she was off her rocker. She kept "badgering" me about it, but convinced me after reiterating that she was training with a team for the PF Changs's Half Marathon January 2007 . She lives in Phoenix, and a lot of the people that joined up were 30+ers that were novice runners. (I am 37, she is 36). I finally gave in and agreed to start training by following the team's schedule. The first day I tried to run, I did half a mile jog, and that was all I could do! I was kind of shocked, thinking that surely I could jog at least a mile, but I was wrong. Boy was that a big old reality check! Within several weeks I built up to three miles, then four, then five etc etc. I was also able to complete the long runs, and eventually did a 14 mile run a few weeks before the race. In January, I flew out to Phoenix and my sister and I finished our first half in 2:20 minutes!!! She and I have completed three half's all together this year, and that's our goal for 2008. If we can do it, ANYONE can! This has seriously been the most rewarding and best thing I could have done for myself, both physically and mentally. There is nothing more rewarding than getting that run in, wether it is one mile or 10 miles. I tell myself that it is my reward to myself to take that time out everyday, just for me. And I write down how I feel after a run... although sometimes a bit tired or sore, mentally I always feel AWESOME! We are ALL worth it!!!!!!!
