All about Angela

Hi, I'm Angela. I'm here to try to lose weight. I'm not so focused on the scale; rather, I want to be able to fit into a size 12. The one and only time that I could wear a 12 (other than when I was younger than 12) was when I was hard-core on the Atkins (low carb) diet and ate like 2 grams of carbs per day while playing tennis eight - ten hours per week. The size 12 pants zipped- I couldn't breathe and my liver ceased to function temporarily- but they zipped. I was a wreck. I got dizzy ...
I got dizzy when I stood up, I was the Wicked Witch of the West re-incarnated, and I was terribly ill all of the time. So it wasn't worth it. I would rather be fat and happy than thin and hospitalized and/ or jailed for killing my roommate. So now I'm trying to be better with food- not have such a love/hate relationship.

I work full time and I'm a part-time grad student in the last stage of my doctorate in education. I've been married about 2 years and we were adopted by a silly Bengal cat. If you have hints or tips, I would love to hear them!

My Goals:
I'm taking baby steps- 10 pounds at a time. I'm not watching the scale quite as closely, I'm more focused on how my clothes fit. So for now, my goal is to wear a size 16- down from my current size 18/20 (my other rant is how I can wear two different sizes in the same designer's clothing- but I won't go there now. :-)

My Program:
I'm an unconscious eater. I munch while grading papers, I nibble while reading. The majority of my meals currently are eaten on the coffee table in front of my couch. Not so good. So my goals:

1. Write down EVERYTHING that I eat on my nutrition tracker. Including beverages. So bye-bye sweet tea; I'll miss you.

2. Make my food. I like to cook, but I've been so busy lately that many foods have come out of the microwave or from the drive through.

3. Take time to eat. I often eat at my desk at work, nibbling while typing emails. Or on the coffee table while I'm watching TV or reading for class. I need to focus on what I'm eating to enjoy it, so I won't be craving cookies ten minutes later just for the taste.

4. Increase my exercise in increments. I have all kinds of exercise equipment and DVDs- it's time to dust them off and use them!

Personal Information:
I'm from North Carolina. Hence my addiction to sweet iced tea. But once I saw how many calories were in a glass of sweet tea, it makes me think that unsweet with splenda isn't so bad after all....

I have a really great and supportive husband who thinks I'm beautiful whatever I weigh... I'm so lucky!

I also have a wacky thyroid. It seems that every time my TSH is checked, it's a very different number. My endocrinologist is trying to figure out what's going on, but no luck thus far. With hypothyrodism that isn't being balanced with synthetic hormones, I'm feeling more sluggish and tired- and less inclined to get off my tush and do something.

Other Information:
I just got married in December 2009, so we're still trying to get used to sharing a house (and trying not to kill each other at times!).

I love to read. One of my favorite authors is Jane Austen, of Pride and Prejudice fame. But I'll read pretty much anything.

I'm also working on a doctorate in college administration/ educational leadership. This takes a HUGE amount of my time to read, write, procrastinate reading and writing, etc.

My dad is also blind due to diabetes and macular degeneration. That's a powerful motivator to get into better shape. So far my blood sugar is perfectly fine, but how long with that last at the rate I'm going now? I don't want to be blind like my dad. It's also quite a time commitment to be his primary caregiver when he needs things.

So I'm really busy, and for too long, I've used that as the excuse why I can't find the time to cook my own food or exercise. But no more!

Hi Angela,

I saw your comment on the blog about concentric and eccentric movements during a workout routine.

Just wanted to let you know that extending your eccentric movements does work for squats and lunges.

You can go down for a 3 count and up for a 1 count. Or vice versa. It works very well!

Hi Angela,
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I tend to avoid this place when I'm feeling guilty for not staying on track. So here I am starting for the zillion-and-oneth time lol, but I am determined to make it my last. I live in Boone too actually, and am at ASU as well. I was thinking of joining Weight Watchers up here, but I don't know if I can afford to fork over the $40 a month for it. I guess I should try to make better use of the free support on here. We'll see though. I'm thinking of going to a meeting next Tuesday though, just to see what I think of it. How are you doing? I see you've lost over 26 pounds!! That's amazing. I hope in a few months I will be able to say the same. Keep in touch!
Lisa
