I am finding my way toward healthy living thru a minefield of erroneous family habits and misinformation, with the help of (mostly) good advice and encouragement from the fine people at Spark!

I have to remind myself of this, as I struggle out of my so comfy chair and head out the door with my walker. Those first few steps are always painful. It would be so easy to stay sat! But what you don't use, you lose. What you do use, gets stronger!

I am moving a veritable MOUNTAIN off my rump, thighs, etc. OF COURSE it will take a while. But, gradually, it IS moving, and I am enjoying the journey, more and more.

This is a tough concept for me! I can ALWAYS think of better things to do than housework. But it too must be done - and can be exercise, as well.

I & my husband are retired. He used to railroad, mostly as a track inspector, volunteered to coach youth baseball and basketball, and was also Mayor of our small rural community. I was church secretary, helped him with baseball and lead cub- and webelo- scouts, was & am still active in the teaching ministry of our church. We both have lost weight, but still need to lose, a lot! He has been slipping back into old bad habits lately, putting on pounds instead of losing, and pulling at me to do likewise. So far, with help from Sparkpeople, I am resisting. Rheumatoid arthritis narrows my choices and hampers my efforts, but with Spark's help I'm learning ways to be active in spite of my limitations. My husband has his own health challenges. He is willing to workhard on our garden, which is a great help, and if helping him stay fitter, at least. Both of us are striving for less weight & greater fitness. We are trying to build a habit of regular exercise and a more active general lifestyle. We raise many of our own vegetables. We exercise, together and separately. I track our calories. But we are fighting the inertia of a lifetime, sometimes roller-coaster style. We often need outside help & motivation.

I AM trying to figure out what I am really hungry for. Also trying to keep regular exercise in my life, mostly walking & swimming, but I have added some cardio on the elliptical trainer and some exercises using smaller dumbbells. I was born & raised in Northern California, but have lived in Northwest Nebraska the past 30 years. I'm part Italian, Swedish, Scot, English, Native American & God knows what all else, but I enjoy all of it.
I read & watch a lot, often online, Bible & Scripture commentary certainly but also a wide variety, from recipe books to earthquake info, Harry Potter - A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY CHRISTIAN SERIES - to HighLander ( I LOVE Adrian Paul's version), Geology & Physics to Murder Mysteries. I paint & do oil pastels, love to hike gentle trails. I follow the geology of Yellowstone with great interest, and having now visited the Grand Canyon, am fascinated by it as well.

You will find lots of new friends, all with ideas to help and support you at different stages on your journey, so please don’t ever be afraid to ask questions or for help/support. Even if it seems like a small thing, but it is important enough to you to think about or wonder about, put it out there on the boards, someone will have the answer, or will have been there and can help you.
