Angel wanna-be, far from flying but still trying...

…"unless you decide for yourself that a lifestyle change is in order and you want to change your life so you will live longer and enjoy a happier, healthier pain free life then you'll be destined to what you've become... That's reality! " Spark person Jukebox2, aka Ray"
I am finding my way toward healthy living thru a minefield of erroneous family habits and misinformation, with the help of (mostly) good advice and encouragement from the fine people at Spark!

"It may seem difficult at first, but everything is difficult at first." - Miyamoto Musashi
I have to remind myself of this, as I struggle out of my so comfy chair and head out the door with my walker. Those first few steps are always painful. It would be so easy to stay sat! But what you don't use, you lose. What you do use, gets stronger!
"Mountains DO move...One stone at a time." ~Rick Beneteau
I am moving a veritable MOUNTAIN off my rump, thighs, etc. OF COURSE it will take a while. But, gradually, it IS moving, and I am enjoying the journey, more and more.
Advice from St. Frances of Rome: "˛It is most laudable in a married woman to be devout, but she must never forget that she is a housewife. And sometimes she must leave God at the altar to find Him in her housekeeping"ˇ (Butler˙s Lives of the Saints)
This is a tough concept for me! I can ALWAYS think of better things to do than housework. But it too must be done - and can be exercise, as well.
Isaiah 41:10 ‘Do not fear, for I am with you;
Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand'
I & my husband are retired. He used to railroad, mostly as a track inspector, volunteered to coach youth baseball and basketball, and was also Mayor of our small rural community. I was church secretary, helped him with baseball and lead cub- and webelo- scouts, was & am still active in the teaching ministry of our church. We both have lost weight, but still need to lose, a lot! He has been slipping back into old bad habits lately, putting on pounds instead of losing, and pulling at me to do likewise. So far, with help from Sparkpeople, I am resisting. Rheumatoid arthritis narrows my choices and hampers my efforts, but with Spark's help I'm learning ways to be active in spite of my limitations. My husband has his own health challenges. He is willing to workhard on our garden, which is a great help, and if helping him stay fitter, at least. Both of us are striving for less weight & greater fitness. We are trying to build a habit of regular exercise and a more active general lifestyle. We raise many of our own vegetables. We exercise, together and separately. I track our calories. But we are fighting the inertia of a lifetime, sometimes roller-coaster style. We often need outside help & motivation.
"Be at Peace
Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life;
Rather look to them with full hope that as they arise,
God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely
through all things;
And when you cannot stand it, God will carry you
in His arms.
Do not fear what may happen tomorrow;
The same everlasting Father who cares for you today
will take care of you today and every day.
He will either shield you from suffering or will give you
unfailing strength to bear it.
Be at peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and
imaginations."
- St. Francis de Sales
"Our life," BLESSED CONTARDO FERRINI said, "must reach out toward the Infinite, and from that source we must draw whatever we can expect of merit and dignity."
"Beloved and most holy word of God! You enlighten the hearts of the faithful, you satisfy the hungry, console the afflicted; you make the souls of all productive of good and cause all virtues to blossom; you snatch souls from the devil’s jaw; you make the wretched holy, and men of earth citizens of heaven" (Sermon of St. James of the Marche).

My Goals:
To live healthy & long, enjoying God's wonderful creation. To meet & enjoy my grand kids.
Pope John Paul II said: "Your life is not an endless series of open doors! Listen to your heart! Do not stay on the surface but go to the heart of things! And when the time is right, have the courage to decide! The Lord is waiting for you to put your freedom in his good hands."

My Program:
The quality of food that I eat determines how full I get from it, not so much the quantity.- Beth Donovan, aka INDYGIRL "Figure Out What You Are Hungry For - It Might Not Be Food" by GANASSI.
"Hunger isn't necessarily for food!

When I am tired, I am hungry for sleep.
When I am thirsty, I am hungry for liquids.
When I am feeling down, I'm hungry for support.
When I am feeling lonely, I'm hungry for people.

Don't eat food when you need friends, or fluids, or sleep!!! Recognize what your hunger actually is for, and satisfy it with what it is craving.

Ice cream rarely gives you extra sleep, quenches your thirst, or gives you a hug!"

I AM trying to figure out what I am really hungry for. Also trying to keep regular exercise in my life, mostly walking & swimming, but I have added some cardio on the elliptical trainer and some exercises using smaller dumbbells. I've parked my car except when leaving town & do all local errands on foot, boug

Personal Information:
I was born & raised in Northern California, but have lived in Northwest Nebraska the past 30 years. I'm part Italian, Swedish, Scot, English, Native American & God knows what all else, but I enjoy all of it.

Other Information:
I read & watch a lot, often online, Bible & Scripture commentary certainly but also a wide variety, from recipe books to earthquake info, Harry Potter - A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY CHRISTIAN SERIES - to HighLander ( I LOVE Adrian Paul's version), Geology & Physics to Murder Mysteries. I paint & do oil pastels, love to hike gentle trails. I follow the geology of Yellowstone with great interest, and having now visited the Grand Canyon, am fascinated by it as well.
"I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see." - John Burroughs, essayist and naturalist
St. Augustine, "God, who created you without your cooperation, will not save you without your cooperation" ("Sermon 169", 13).

Hi, just wanted to drop in to say I thought your comment on the "What benefits do you have from regular exercise?" thread was very inspiring. After all, we all want to live long, but most of us don't want to be constrained by constant pain or even a walker. Best wishes for your way toward health!
