Glad to see your comment on the Beginner's Running Club. I could use some mutual support in training for a 5K. I'm going to add you as a friend. Taking it slowly is definitely the way to go. There are some great tips for avoiding shin splints on this site (just do a search), particularly LOTS of stretching and some walking exercises (on heals toes out, on heals toes in, on toes heals out, on toes heals in) that seem to be working for me so far.
