After several years living with dark depression and debilitating anxiety, and then slowly finding my way toward hope, I have come to learn and accept a few things. This is what is making it possible (finally and again) for me to move the scale in the opposite direction:

1. Get out of toxic relationships right now. Don't wait. Your life, health, self-worth, and happiness depend on it.

2. Treat yourself the way you do the people you love. Self-compassion is key to peace and progress.

3. Chances are, you have been the same person at every size you have lost and gained, and lost again over the yourself at every step of the journey. I promise you that love is what will take you where you want to go.

4. Never stop fighting to discover and fight for what makes you special. As they say, that is your superpower.

5. When the sky is blue and the air is fresh, go outside to absorb as much light as you can.

6. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone whenever you can to try new things, or meet new people. Tiny accomplishments lead to big feelings of satisfaction and joy.

7. Love the world with as much sincerity as you can muster in any given moment and on any given day. We all need what you need - to be understood, accepted, or even to encounter a warm smile.

8. Allow trusted people into your life to help when you need it. And yes, you need help from time to time. Sometimes a lot, sometimes a little.

9. Congratulate yourself for tiny victories. Sometimes showering or doing the dishes is a BIG deal. Be proud of yourself. You're taking those steps because you're experiencing a teensy glimmer of hope. Water it!

10. Rock bottom can be a fantastic foundation from which to build a life. (so many people have said this, I can't choose who to credit - but truer words were never spoken.)

BONUS tip:

11. Share your story whenever it makes sense. You never know who is watching, listening or reading. We can all learn from each other's strength or weaknesses. We need each other, so be authentic and be open.
