More Carrots. Less Sticks.
Hi All, My name is Alissa, and I'm 30 years old, married, and a mom. I've been yo-yoing for years now, and I'm sick of it. So I'm ready to get serious, get skinny, and stay there for good. One of my biggest issues is that I really want to set a healthy example for my son. I grew up in a household where fresh fruits and veggies were practically unheard of - a typical meal was meat, potatoes, and maybe a can of corn or green beans. I literally can't remember EVER eating a fresh piece of fruit in my house while growing up. I was fairly thin as a teenager, but those poor eating habits really caught up with me in my twenties. I don't want the same thing to happen to my son. I want him to grow up in a household where healthy meals and lots of activity are the "norm" in hopes that he will never have to struggle with his weight the way I have. Luckily, I have a FABULOUS husband who is uber supportive of me at any weight, and who has been working to get healthy as well. He's wonderful about celebrating my accomplishments (eating well, exercising) without making me feel like he wants or needs me to lose weight. It's a really good environment to get healthy emotionally and mentally as well, and I'm very lucky. What else? I like to eat. A lot. I don’t like to go hungry. At all. I’m a big baby about it, to be honest. So what this means is that I have to choose healthy things to eat (of course) but I’ve also discovered that it also means that I have to work out like a demon to burn those calories (and thereby earn some more.) So my basic plan is that I’m running, biking, walking, and doing strength training for what feels like HOURS a day. The upside is that I’m learning to enjoy this time. It used to feel like a real chore, but really, that's me time. Running makes me feel like a Tough Girl (in a very good way) and the exercise bike gives me 40 minutes a day to read (score!) and walking is a nice time to think and listen to my iPod. So it all works out, AND it means that I can eat a little bit more. Win win. So that's about it. I look forward to Sparking with you all.
