MY STORY:

A year and a half ago in January 2007, at roughly 40 pounds overweight, I HATED MYSELF. I avoided my friends and family because I was too ashamed to let them see what I had let myself become. I'd eat fast food alone in my car and order enough to feed a small family. I HID these things from my own husband, who I had started to detach myself from. I'd eat junk just for that instant gratification and feel horrible about it afterwards. I wore sweatshirts and pants, even when it was hot. I refused to go anywhere that I'd have to show my figure in any way. Passing by full-length mirrors made me die inside, and as I sit here reflecting on those memories, tears come to my eyes.

GROWING UP: I was always the "almost" FAT KID growing up. Meaning, I didn't have big rolls or anything like that, but I was always pudgy and unathletic. I'd be the kid who dreaded pool parties because bathing suits pinched. I was the kid that wore the baggy t-shirts and shorts in the water. My parents were overprotective so instead of being outdoors playing sports, I was spoiled with toys and fast food whenever I wanted. My parents came from a verrry poor country right before I was born so to them, giving me McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell (you name it) was like giving me little pieces of luxury they never had. They didn't realize that they were setting me up for an adulthood of me fighting my ultra slow metabolism. =(

RIGHT BEFORE I FOUND SPARKPEOPLE - I didn't even know where to begin to get myself out of that rut. I hated myself, my job, my LIFE. WHO HATES THEIR LIFE? The Big Man upstairs threw me a bone, and I saw the light some way, somehow, to take action and help myself. I'm so very grateful for Sparkpeople and for the things I've learned.

I was 168 pounds in January 2007 when I started Sparkpeople and when I hit the heaviest weight I have ever been in my life - 168. I'm 5'6 1/2. After I saw photos from NYE, I knew I had to do something about it!. From January 2007 to March 2008, I was able to lose A WHOPPING THIRTY-FIVE POUNDS!!! I was at 133 pounds when I completed the Los Angeles Marathon on 133 and in great shape. From March 2008 to June 2008, I put on about 10 pounds. As of June 2008, I was at 144 when I recommitted to Sparkpeople after not being active on the site due to marathon training and being an in the closet pig post-marathon. I lost my mojo =(

But my SPARK IS IN FULL EFFECT NOW AND I'M READY TO SET THIS PLACE ON FIRE!

I hope sharing my story and the little bits of knowledge I've picked up along my journey will inspire someone else to do the same.

I LOVE the person that I am right now and I cannot wait to be the woman that I'll be in the future! Every day, I wake up thinking about what I can do for myself to get a better mind and body, both inside and out. When I work towards this goal and make progress, my heart is happy and my mind is sharp, and everything trivial falls by the wayside.

I don't want to give myself a reason or the time to dwell on the negative things in this world, and I want to do my best to encourage, inspire, and recruit others to join me!

THINGS I'VE LEARNED SINCE BEING ON SPARKPEOPLE:

- I used to eat WAY more than I needed to be full and fuel my body. EDUCATE yourself on the foods that are good for you and those you should avoid.

- You don't have to deprive yourself of the "naughty" foods and drinks you love - MODERATION is the key.

- Starving myself and working out without the proper nutrition and knowledge of basic fitness principles only resulted in SHORT TERM fitness.

- Results come faster and are more permanent when you combine regular cardio, resistance training, and a properly balanced diet. Without ALL THREE, reaching your full potential is not impossible, but probably unlikely.

- Fasting to look good in a bikini or a dress for a special night or vacation left me worse off than when I started, just leading me to be bigger than I was beforehand.

- "Healthy" food does NOT have to be GROSS. In fact, it's a pleasure to have healthy meals because I've learned tasty but figure-friendly substitutes (see www.Hungry-Girl.com and various resources on Sparkpeople).

- Drawing on motivation from others keeps you interested in achieving and maintaining your fitness goals. I love browsing other Sparkers' pages and seeing their progress

- Only your MIND and HEART can limit what your BODY can really accomplish.

- The SUPPORT from your family and friends WILL help you on your journey to true fitness, SHOW THEM that you are grateful for their support and don't be afraid to ask them for it.

- Learning how to LOVE yourself is KEY to your success.

I'm ESPECIALLY grateful for my Orange County Nesties that are in this boat with me and who share in my joys and frustrations in my struggle for achieving true fitness of mind and body. We're in it together ladies and I promise if you push me, I'll try to push you harder to get you as close as possible to where you ultimately want to be! Thanks so much to "JESSRKIM" for even getting me to join this site, and "ALINE812" for being such a great motivator to me as well as being awesome friends in real life.

I may not get "thin" or "perfect" overnight, and I'm not asking for that anyway because I really do believe that SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE!! (Lest we forget that the turtle prevailed over the....rabbit or whatever it was).

Not sure if you have heard, but I am pregnant. It has been a crazy 14 weeks thus far, but we are excited and blessed.

My workouts are still going. I am back to P90X with arms, legs, and Yoga. I also am working on adding in 10-15 miles per week for walks.

Food, has been okay, but each day I just take it one meal at a time.

Love to you,
E
