Surprise!! I have been faithfully sparking for almost 3 years now, and guess what? My journey is still ongoing. Its taking a long time to unlearn a lifetime of bad habits but I am getting there. I am trying to tride out every bump in the road and use those mistakes as "teachable moments" to help me get to where I need to be. As the layers of my life get more complex its taking more effort to put my health first. I am aware of what I need to do and sliding in those little bits of healthy living when and where I can. Injuries, stress, and just plain old laziness (mostly the laziness) have allowed me to pack on 12 pounds from my lowest weight. That doesn't sound too bad, but its about a size and a half!!! I have been I am trying not to beat myself up too much, but darn I miss those size 6 pants.
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To remind your friends they are worthwhile.
To look at the sunny side of everything.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud word, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

I started with Sparkpeople in February of 2008. At first I just wanted to see what it was all about, but when I logged my food for the first time I was shocked. I had no idea how much I was eating! Right away I started cutting back on my calories and it didn't take long for me to start seeing some results. As time went on, I learned more about diet and exercise and started incorporating these things into my life. I stopped eating junk food (mostly) because it didn't fit into my calorie"budget." I started drinking water (because SP told me to) and was so suprised at how much better I felt when I was hydrated. I started exercising after being on Spark for about 2-3 weeks, and within 5 months I ran my first 5k. As of today, June 7th 2009, I am down to 136 lbs. I wear size 6-8 in pants and a small or medium in tops. That is down from size 20 pants and 1x shirts. Big difference! It has been great, and I know I couldn't have gotten this far without this website and all of these fabulous people on this website.
One of the most important parts of this journey to me has been having the support and encouragement from my amazing friends, Aundrea, Jerri and Nita. (a.k.a. Aundreaw, Pickle22 and Go-Nita) It has been a blast to have all of us getting healthy and fit together. Never underestimate the power of a supportive group of friends. Astonishing things can happen when 4 motivated women put their minds to something. My girls are always trying to push me out of my comfort zone to try new things, and it has been a blast. Who would have thought that I would have tried something as crazy as the down & dirty 5K? Not me. But I did it!

July 2010 Update:
Well, I did it! I ran a marathon. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't fast, but I finished! Unfortunately I managed to "find" 10 pounds I had previously lost in the process. Its just another reminder to me to always be mindful of food and exercise. I can't get lazy! The next 6 months will be devoted to losing 20 pounds and I really think that I can do it. :)
January 2010 Update:
Excited for the new year!!
I have gained a couple pounds due to injury and self control issues. I am still wearing mostly 8's with a couple 6's here and there. Fortunately I have found a sort of rhythm and can somewhat intuitively control my calories. Unfortunately I can only do that when I am injured and exercising much less.
2010 is the year that I will run my first marathon. I am re-evaluating my goals and will only work on preparing for this marathon for the next six months. I will work on losing the last 15 pounds the second half of 2010. I have found that training for big races and restricting calories is too much stress for me. I will focus on maintaining my current weight and training injury free. That is hard enough!
September 2009 Update:
Well, I have pretty much stopped losing weight. Having my body stay at one size for a while has given me a new appreciation for it. I am not perfect, yet I am starting to love my body for what it is. Its strong enough to propel me 8 miles down the road on a run if I ask it to, and soon I will be asking it to take me much further. I have found that while still trying to lose weight I have slipped into a much more comfortable system of eating and exercising that I know will be possible to live with forever. I am trying to let go of my ideas of perfection. I am trying to enjoy what I have now, instead of dreaming of what it will be like when I am "really done." This is easier said than done. I think most of us have our own hang ups and body issues to deal with. Next step will be to stop weighing myself everyday and having my day depend on whether it was a good weigh-in or a bad one. Baby steps. I think it also helps that I have been trying to up my running so I can complete a half-marathon with my friends in November. That gives me something else to focus on besides pounds on the scale. Still wearing an 8 or a 6. Take that old size 20's!
15 month update: May 2009 (Weight loss 69 lbs.)
These past few months have been tougher for me. Weight loss ranges between slow and non-existent. I know that I am the one to blame. I have slid into that too comfortable routine of logging MOST of my food, and USUALLY getting my workouts in. I need to refocus my efforts and get back into the swing of things. Having my close friends as a support has been amazing. Without them I probably would have slid much further. So far no major damage has been done!! If I keep on track I think I have a chance of fitting into a size 6 consistently. Right now I am wearing mostly an 8, but I do have a couple of size 6 beauties. When I think back to 15 months ago when I was wearing a 20 it almost doesn't seem real. So, here is to a fabulous summer of achieving goals!
1 year update (February 2009)
A year has gone by and I am a totally different person than I was last year. My priorities have changed. 64 pounds are gone, gone, gone. I take my own health very seriously. It's kind of nice to take care of yourself for a change, you should try it :) Its hard to believe that I ignored my health for so long. I was in a rut, too comfortable with my fatness to try and change. Thank God I found Spark when I did. Who knows how much more time I would have wasted being unhealthy, overweight and unhappy.
So I would like to take a moment to say goodbye to a few things that I do NOT miss.
*Goodbye hiding from cameras
*Goodbye plus size clothes
*Goodbye nightly headaches
*Goodbye bloated moon face (and good riddance)
*Goodbye to always being the fat friend
*Goodbye secret eating
*Goodbye Big Macs
*Goodbye low self esteem
*Goodbye to always avoiding mirrors
Hmm, now that I think of it, I do miss Big Macs sometimes.... Oh well, nobody's perfect!
I think the main thing I have learned (and this took me a long time) was to just trust the process. Eating right and exercising WILL improve your health and help you lose weight. Sometimes it comes quickly, sometimes super slowly, but no matter what, you are getting healthier bit by bit. I am trying to not let the slowness of the scale get me down. I KNOW I am getting there. Hopefully this next year will bring me new achievements in fitness and health! Whoo Hoo!
10 month update: 12/21/08
I can hardly believe I am closing in on a year on Spark! What a great year for me. 63 pounds are gone! Just 9 left until I hit my goal and start the new challenge of maintenence. I am still tracking my food and exercise every day, and utilizing a lot of the tools here on Spark. I am now wearing size 10 pants and mostly mediums on top. I enjoy having my medium moments! Only my DW girls will understand that... My body fat has gone down 17% according to my scale. My heart rate monitor was stolen out of my car, but hopefully Santa will bring me a new one for Christmas. I LOVE using a HRM and I would recommend anyone who is serious about increasing their fitness level to try and get hold of one. Another huge motivational tool for me is having my friends work out with me. I work harder when I have my darling friends Jerri, Nita and Aundrea encouraging me to keep going. (I used to hate that)
My weight loss is S L O W right now.... That sucks, but I guess I will just have to celebrate every pound that my friends are losing instead. Hopefully I will lose some inches along the way.
8 month update: 10/18/08
My total weight loss so far is around 56 lbs. I am actually fitting into size 10 pants/jeans! These past two months have been tougher. I have been having long stretches of no weight loss whatsoever, then one week I will drop 2 lbs. I had gotten used to losing slowly but steadily. :) I am almost at my third 10% goal of 151. Once I hit 149 I will officially be in a healthy BMI! That is pretty exciting. I am still working hard at fitting in my exercise. It is getting harder, but I am trying to get more creative and flexible. I do have a heart rate monitor now that really helps with accuracy. I am still using the nutrition tracker and fitness tracker religously.
Thanks again SP!
6 month update: 8/14/08
I have gotten rid of 46 pounds! I am down to a 12 in pants and a Large in shirts (mostly). There are a few xl's and 14's here and there. Another fabulous and amazing side effect of weight loss and exercising is that I haven't gotten sick in months!! I used to get colds CONSTANTLY! I got to the point where I was seriously concerned that my immune system was shot. Thank you SP!
4 months have gone by and I am 35 pounds lighter!! WooHoo! I have gone from an 18W- 20W to a misses 14. I use many of the tools on this site daily. The nutrition tracker, the fitness tracker, message boards, and articles are all very important to my success. I am not losing as fast as I did in the beginning, but that is OKAY! I am enjoying life so much more now because I have so much energy. Plus I feel better physically.
Well, I have been on SP for almost 2 months now!! I am feeling so much healthier and happier. This seems to be a lifestyle change that I can embrace. I feel better because I am putting better food in my body, and I feel stronger from the exercise.
I am trying to find some before pics of myself to post, but I deleted most of the pictures of myself... Hopefully I can get to the point where I like having my picture taken again.
My mother has a serious chronic disease that is somewhat genetic. I don't know if I will get it, but I do know that I need to keep my body as healthy as possible. I need to keep my weight down, and to eat a healthier diet.
Plus, I want to look good! I dont want to be embarrassed to wear shorts in public, or worry about how my butt looks in jeans, or avoid tank tops even when its really hot outside. I want to be comfortable with my body.

I have upped my calorie intake and my workouts. Now I am ranging between 1400-1700 and I am burning at least 1800-2000 calories a week. I mix up my cardio between zumba, running, tennis, racquetball and Y machines. Strength training is usually at home with dumbells and ball. I have been trying to take a body circuit class lately that mixes strength and cardio.
I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
I am married with 2 kids, 3 cats, a dog and a bird.
I have some very motivating and positive friends who always encourage and challenge me. My husband is awesome and is my best friend. There are NO sabotagers in my life!
