I love SparkPeople and I love all of you! We can do this together! I lost about 80 pounds, which fluctuates depending on the season (winter in Minnesota, oy!). But at this point, I don't care what the scale says anymore because I've put on so much muscle mass that the scale isn't an appropriate measurement of my success! I couldn't run 10 miles 10 years ago at this same weight! When I was 24, I was at least 77 pounds overweight. I was eating and drinking like crazy. ...
I was out of control. I had undiagnosed ADHD (I STILL have ADHD--it's just diagnosed now) and I coped with feeling like an outsider by eating. I literally created a wall between myself and the world--a wall of fat. It insulated me from pain and hurt. It let me put on a fake smile to the world and I kept myself from feeling my true emotions. In September 2005, I saw photos of me at my big brother's wedding and had an epiphany. I had to change or I would have the same problems my father and his family had--heart problems, diabetes, depression, and all of that. I couldn't keep walking that dark path. So I made a change. I sort of stumbled in the dark first, only knowing my health was at risk. I lost 20 pounds and saw the light. I formed a plan. I knew I had to do it slow. I'm dealing with my emotions in a healthy way now that I know I have ADHD. I still love food, just in smaller quantities! I stumbled on SP in January 2008 and realized it was the perfect tool for motivating me to lose those last stubborn pounds. So here I go! I just competed in my first triathlon in July, 2008 and had a lot of fun. It was amazing and now I'm hooked. My latest goal is to complete my first "official" half marathon by the end of summer 2011.
