I Think I Can

I joined Sparkpeople in order to have an easy way to be accountable to myself for achieving my fitness goals. My original specific goal was to finish the Jingle Bell 5k fun run in December, which I did.

Now my goals are to stick with my running, strength training, Pilates and spinning. I want to maintain my weight between 112 and 115 pounds, avoid injury and stay healthy.

My Goals:
My current goal is to improve my 5k time by 10 minutes.

My Program:
When I joined Spark People I had NEVER run before!! I started the Rookie Running Program in September 2011 and I finished it on November 15. WOOHOO!

As part of my training program I walked/ ran the Trick or Treat Virtual 5k Race and I was thrilled that I was able to finish it doing more running than walking.

I finished the 2011 Jingle Bell Run 5k and I actually ran the entire distance. I had never run more than 2 miles without walking before the race so that was a real thrill.

Since the race I have been working on improving my time and my endurance. I do sprint intervals on Monday and Wednesday and long slow distance runs on Saturday.

My current distance PR is 6.2 miles, which I did in a virtual 10k race in October.

My goal is to finish a 5k in under 40 minutes. I am planning to sign up for the Groundhog Jog 5k on February 2d so that will be my first chance to try for that PR in an actual race.

I'm in CA right now at a friends house for a few weeks. We are going to a condo she has a time share in also for a week in Hawaii and going to Yosemite before I leave to back to Dallas/Fort Worth area in about 6 weeks. I'm glad to have some time away from all family and to do some things I hadn't thought I would do. We started planning a shorter version of this trip a year ago, before I had a stroke but after it grew and I had a little more time to do it. And the trips here, back, and also to Hawaii were done with her frequent flier miles so I didn't even have to pay for airfair. Awesome!

Thanks for commenting on my weight loss. Little by little I'm losing back what I gained in the hospital and before the stroke with my daughters'. I am determined!

Thanks so much for reading my blog and for your words! I am lucky I know. Sometimes it doesn't feel that way when I see how much I had to give up and start over. But then I see people in a wheelchair, or walker, or having really serious problems in other areas and Is ee how far I've come. I can drive and do better when sitting down. I can walk but can't do anything else, like look to the side, button my jacket, et at the same time or I'm all over the place and when looking around get dizzy. No where near running. And I have to stop and rest frequently on those walks LOL. But I still have come to far in spite of those and some other problems. Gradually some of those are getting better. I'm right handed but it still shakes some, and I have had to learn to eat with my left had or I spill it everywhere. Not great with left hand either! But I can't write with my left hand. Typing I make a lot of mistakes especially on the right side. Thank goodness for backspace ha ha. But when I have to actually write it is a slow and painful process still. But clearer than when I was in the hospital. Hopefully most or all will come back in time. Not quite 5 months since the stroke so I guess I'm actually doing pretty well! Course I had to take a driving test but thankfully I passed! Yeah!
