I'm 49, from Montreal and have decided that I'm going to shed the weight that I've been carrying for 20 years. I quit drinking when the scale read 178, and have lost 19 lbs already in only 8 weeks. No alcohol, plenty of walking in the woods and a complete change of eating habits seems to be working wonders, so I guess I will just sit back and wait for the results.......

Update: Well that worked and I went down to 158 then started drinking again.....crap

Weight went up about 30 lbs in 6 months, mostly because I eat decidedly UNHEALTHILY when I am in a drinking, I don't give a s*** mode.......lol

Caught hold of myself at 50, quit again on March 7th 2009 and went from 186 to 136 in about 7 months. Sobriety is the only way for me; it keeps me interested in life, it gets me out walking and it leaves energy to actually shop for food, prepare it, and research food and nutriton. I am working on the last 5 lbs by changing my diet to low carb with plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, meat and such. I actually prefer eating this way, but it does involve a bit more cooking since I can't just make a turkey sandwich......damn

Now that the walking and diet have taken off 50 lbs, I'm actually enjoying (sort of) weight training because I can see the results right away....WooHoo!

My Goals:
I'd like to reach 154 lbs by the end of Feb and set a new goal of 144 by the beginning of May. I'd like to join the tennis club that I walk by in the summer and have always said would be fun to join. I plan on amusing myself by shopping for clothes and actually enjoying it!!!

Update on Oct 28th 2009: Never joined the tennis club, but did join the Y for weight training. Surprisingly I don't enjoy clothes shopping even though I am a size 8 these days. I need everything from bras to work sweaters to winter clothes but I just can't get into it. I think I'm going to have to surrender my chick card.........lol


My Program:
Goals I set on Dec. 5th 2007
*No alcohol period!l
*Walk 5X a week for 1 hour
*No sweets except cereal
*Less carbs per meal
*Small meals only
*Eat nuts when hungry
*Every few days eat more than usual so my metabolism doesn't slow down
*I aim for about 1500 calories a day, but don't weigh or measure anything and don't fret if I go over which I do frequently.

Updated Oct 28th 2009: Everything is the same except I've eliminated cereal and bread, I've added dark chocolate everyday and got more serious about eliminating grains. Small amounts of brown rice or a few wedges of roasted potato have been known to appear on my plate a couple of times a week.....hehe

    Regarding damage control, I totally agree with you about the carbs. Eating refined carbs just make me want to eat more refined carbs so I avoid them (most of the time!) Atkins kind of gave lo carb eating a bad name but protein and healthy fat and fiber really keeps me from feeling hungry and grazing. It has obviously worked for you!!
