Welcome, and thanks for visiting my SparkPage!

UPDATE 1/16/2018: Well, here I am again, having made no progress at all since the last attempt I made to get on track (although I did lose a few pounds over the course of last summer, being very busy with the garden). I'll turn 70 this year, in August, and my goal consists of going from my present 241 lbs to 180 by that time. A very big challenge for me remains to limit/eliminate alcohol, which has added vast numbers of calories to my intake. I feel ready to do this right now (and had no alcohol yesterday, for the first day in a long time) and am not seeing it as a deprivation but rather a liberation. I'm also looking forward to doing strengthening and balance exercise, which has definitely been lacking in my routine - partly due to hip pain, low back pain, and a painful left heel/Achilles tendon.

UPDATE 6/20/2016: Celebrating the first day of summer by again resetting my goals! Despite my intentions in February I have not been visiting the site or doing any tracking of my food and fitness; and also had an elevated blood sugar at my most recent doctor appointment. I am back here to commit to a healthier lifestyle -- despite my many failures to follow through in the past, I remain convinced that I can succeed!

UPDATE 2/16/2016: Again resetting my goals, my weight is right back to ground zero. Although I want to lose more eventually, my present goal is to lose 50 pounds by my birthday in August. I need to seriously examine why I cannot seem to commit to my plan for any length of time!

UPDATE 10/15/2014: Resetting my goals as I have back-slid to my original weight of 250! Regardless, I know I can do this with the help of SparkPeople :-) I have been away from Spark for quite a while and apologize to my friends for dropping out of sight... I hope to reconnect and find my place here again!

UPDATE 10/20/13: I'm now 65 years old and have a goal of losing a total of nearly 100 pounds, which is a long way to go but I know I can do it if I take it one day at a time and have help from the other members of Spark People!

I originally called my page "Metamorphosis365" because the caterpillar changing it's form so radically into a butterfly seems a very apt comparison to what I was attempting to do over the course of 365 days. However, I got quite off track for a few months and it became obvious that I wouldn't reach my goal in that amount of time, so I changed the name to simply "metamorphosis," because I have by no means given up on my goals!

I also want to focus on eating healthier foods -- and not just grabbing whatever might be handy in the fridge (which often turns out to be some cheese and crackers or other high-fat, high-calorie item), and to get back to some regular exercise, which will at first consist pretty much of just walking on my treadmill. I do stay pretty active in general, with a big garden to take care of, our 2 big dogs, household chores and so on, but haven't done anything on a regular basis in quite some time.

I KNOW that if I take this one day at a time I can do it!

My Goals:
Ultimately achieve a weight of 150 pounds; even more important to me at this point, is to regain strength, particularly in my legs. I've been way too sedentary for too long!

In mid August 2018 I will be turning 70, and am working toward being in much better shape by then as compared to the beginning of the year! I've let a problem with sciatica somewhat hinder my efforts for the past couple of years but believe that weight loss and more exercise will help my body heal. No more excuses!

My Program:
Track my food and exercise using the planners.
Drink at least the recommended 8 cups of water daily.
Reduce the amount of Diet Coke that I drink, and limit alcohol consumption to a minimal amount.
Walk on my treadmill at least 6 days a week, starting with 10 minutes and working up to 45. Also use the Wii "Walk It Out" game to increase the number of steps that I take.
Work on finding other means of dealing with stress and boredom, such as exercise, meditation, hobbies that I previously enjoyed but have dropped.

Personal Information:
My name is Sandy; I'm 69 years old, retired for the past 7 years, and live in the Michigan Upper Peninsula with my husband of 28 years, 2 big collies and 2 cats. I enjoy gardening - even though the season is pretty short here, as well as nature photography, reading and many types of crafts and needlework.

Favorite quotes:
Just keep breathing -- you never know what the tide will bring in.

Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it.

I enjoy your metamorphosis and butterfly references. I have seen my life in that way too. Don't ever give up on yourself. You clearly know the changes you need to make and you are taking the steps to make them happen. That's emoticon !!

Thanks for visiting my Spark page and leaving a comment. I have been fortunate to have had two black cats as pets, so they seemed like a natural for my page decoration. glad you are back!

I was just browsing around and found your page under the motivational pages. I love butterflies and think your page and name are beautiful. I have been a member for five years, but got an injury and stopped exercising. I am almost back to the weight I was when I started back then, so basically, I am starting over. It takes work, but it really has helped me to have a place like SparkPeople to keep me motivated.
