Mi Familia 2004 - Notice I'm hiding my weight! I'm in the upper 150's
Mother's Day 06, This pix was my wake up call. I was 160 lbs, near my heaviest of 168.5.

My name is Denise, I am a Wife, Mother of 2 great boyz, an Oncology Nurse, avid reader, and love to relax and kick back after all the work is done. I firmly believe in balance. I work when I work and love it, but I also relax when I relax and love it.
I was always thin to average as a child and young adult, but when I went to college (at 26) and then had kids, I stopped taking care of myself physically. As a new nurse working nights, I packed on 20 lbs. I ate to stay awake. As a new Mom, especially after my 2nd son who slept poorly, I packed on another 25lbs, again to stay awake (I was sleep deprived for almost 2 years). I prided the fact that my weight didn't carry much in my face. UNTIL I saw my Mother's Day 2006 picture. I was so depressed looking at it. I was in the middle of moving out of state, back to CA, so I put that pix out of my mind. Fast forward almost 2 yrs (of doing little about my weight) and I hit an all time high weight of 168.5 lbs. I found SP looking for a recipe calculator. I started browsing SP and found that if I gained a half pound more, I would be considered Obese! My BMI, % body fat, and weight were skirting the edge. THAT was my catalyst! I changed my eating habits right then and there. It was time to take myself back. I've watched my Mother struggle with her weight all my life. I didn't want to do the same.
I rediscovered Tae Kwon Do after 20 yrs and it has motivated me to exercise again.... for fun as well as fitness. And my boyz are enjoying it too. What a bonus! I also, on a whim, decided to register for my local Half Marathon a few months away. Tho I was never a good runner, after learning more about running, I started to enjoy it more and I am getting better at it. I committed to 4 months of HM training. Since I refused to cut back on my TKD, I pulled double duty. By the time I ran my first HM race, I lost 33 lbs in 6 months. And as of now, have maintained this loss while continuing to train for other HMs. I believe the last 10-15 lbs I want to lose are more of a mental/emotional issue for me. It's very slow going, but that's okay, as it is a work in progress. I feel and look better now and that is what is important to me. I am not stressing over it.
Right now, I am in control of my own lifestyle and tired of putting myself last in the family equation. It is time for ME to be in charge of ME, and everything else will fall in place naturally. I want to be a good example for my boyz to follow. They deserve a healthy
It has been almost 2 1/2 yrs since I started exercising and 2 yrs since I started running. I am still doing it. While my weight has fluctuated in the last 9 months up 10 lbs, I have never quit. My diet habits fluctuate, but my exercise keeps me from regaining all 30 lbs. I still feel better than I did at my highest weight. I work nights again, so I struggle with eating badly at night, but not as much as I did the first time. I have also learned something else through all this: what I put in my mouth, directly affects my exercise performance (especially running), though I still struggle with eating for peak performance. This is hard work, and even harder to maintain.
Just celebrated another birthday, my 3rd year on SP, and 16 months working the 12 hour night shift. I've gained 10 lbs since working nights, and 5 before that. That leaves me with ONE pair of pants and sweats. Pathetic. I have been sooooo incredibly tired and my hormones are out of wack. I have continued to exercise, but it waned off greatly after September. My hot flashes returned as a result, so I started working out more, but my running has suffered and I am starting from ground zero again. I have finally had my health practioner help me with my hormones situation and things have started to improve. I feel like things are just starting to get back on track. I am also finally starting strength training. I don't have any future racing plans except my local 5k. I've come to realize that maintenance is harder than losing.
I have since gained back all my weight and have felt depressed and tired. I couldn't get motivated. I finally got off working nights back in 7/2011 but have not been the same. Exercise has not been the problem for me. I continued to exercise, but not at the same intensity and vigor as I did when I was losing the weight and racing. I have a newfound respect for anyone who can maintain weight loss over the long haul. It is harder than losing. Without a PURPOSE or CHALLENGE, I will slack and eat poorly. I have lost 10 lbs so far because I have found something to motivate me. My BootCamp friends were talking about doing a Ragnar Relay Race and I was reluctant because I didn't think I could do it. But I didn't want to be left out either. I said yes and now I am soooo exicted. I'm looking forward to it even. I will be 50 next month and I have a goal to lose 15 lbs by then. 5 more to go, and counting.

I love to read! Fiction, Children's fiction, Youth Fiction, some Non Fiction. I am always scoping out the next awesome book to read. I listen to audiobooks during my commute to/from work, I have one-two paper books for break & bedtime reading and I have one book that I read with the kids at bedtime. My all time...hands down...favorite book(s) is Harry Potter. I love JKR's style of writing. I also love The Color Purple, The Kite Runner, The Help, Memoirs of a Geisha, Flowers for Algernon, To Kill a Mockingbird, House of Sand and Fog, Me Talk Pretty One Day. I journal the books I've read since Sept '04 when I rediscovered reading at a neighborhood book club when I lived in Texas..
