I'm 29 and have over 100 pounds to lose.

Family
I live with my husband and our 'roommate,' along with our four dogs, four cats and three box turtles. Our dogs include a goofy Great Dane, a neurotic rat terrier, a grumpy chihuahua, and a spastic meagle (beagle/min pin mix). Our cats are a short haired gray and white domestic, a calico, an all white munchkin with a blue eye and amber eye, and a tortie munchkin. Our box turtles include a cranky American and two baby Easterns.

Work
I own a family care business and work with children, pets, seniors, etc. I love what I do. Managing the business though is hard work. I've noticed that if I don't get 8 hours of sleep, I'm impatient and cranky. (Not with my clients, but with myself and my family, which isn't fair to anyone.) So I'm on Spark to manage my weight loss, stress, and sort of my life in general.

Education
I have a BA in English - professional writing, (minored in political science and sociology) and an MA in technical communication. I realized however, that offices and office politics (and the lack of employment opportunities) were driving my depression and anxiety so I've stepped out of the arena, much to husband's intense disappointment. I created my own job - see above.

Politics
I'm a liberal, through and through. I believe in LGBTQ rights, women's rights, abortion rights, health care rights, environmental protections, that global warming is real, that the earth is round, etc.

Religion
I'm Episcopalian and a Progressive Christian. I am dismayed because Christianity has been overtaken by the so-called "Christian" Right. My faith is strengthened through a Facebook group called "The Christian Left," which stresses the love and inclusiveness of Jesus. I also love "Kissing Fish," which combines the Jesus fish (Christianity) with the Darwin fish (evolution/science).

Hobbies
I LOVE reading. I love the classics, historical fiction, manga, horror, thriller, mystery, graphic novels, fantasy/sci-fi, etc. My favorite authors include Shakespeare, Poe, Bradbury, Vonnegut, Rowling, Ken Follett, Preston & Child, Douglas Adams, etc.
I also enjoy miniatures, but because of space limitations at home and a couple of naughty cats it's on the back burner.
My favorite TV shows include Supernatural, Melissa & Joey, Are You Afraid of the Dark? (just got the DVDs for Christmas), Criminal Minds, Psych, etc.

Health
Mental health has always been an issue for me. I've been suicidal since I was five years old. I've lost count of how many attempts I've made. Now, having finally found the right therapist, I am depression free and no longer suicidal. I no longer need my medication. I'm doing so well. I just can't believe it. But I can, because I worked hard to get here.
I've struggled with anorexia for 16 years. I just have to keep a close eye on myself to make sure I don't slip. (It also helps to have a couple people I can be held accountable to for eating right, not binging, etc.) And if I hear one more person say, "I wish I could be anorexic," I'm going to kick them.

My Program:
I'm doing Spark's 5K Challenges which incorporates walking/jogging and cross-training. For me, walking includes walking the neighborhood, walking clients' dogs, walking on the treadmill, and hiking. Cross-training includes stationary bike, elliptical, swimming, and strength training. For strength training, I'm using Spark's workout builder and of course adjusting for the equipment my gym has.



Personal Information:
I have lived in Texas all my life, however I have traveled around the world. I've been to France, Portugal, England, Canada, Mexico and to a few states. I LOVE traveling. Experiencing other cultures, lifestyles, food, everything, is the highlight of my life. My favorite city in the US is Seattle. My favorite place abroad is England, particularly Canterbury. I adore Canterbury.

April 18: Lost 32 pounds
April 19: Improved 5K time by 6 minutes and 29 seconds

May
May 3: Black jeans cannot stay up, too loose
May 19: Unintentionally beat previous 5K record by 1 minute and 53 seconds
May 24: Beat previous 5K by 3 minutes and 16 seconds
May 25: Able to clean for hours without back spasming
May 26: Went from 2X workout pants to 1X

    Congrats on taking the first step into changing your life to a more healthier one by joining the site. Spark is filled with amazing people that will motivate, support and encourage you on your journey. There is so much to learn and discover here, take this one day at a time. A couple of things I would like to suggestion to make you Spark experience a great one.

    1. Make goals for yourself. Each month I make a list of what I want to accomplish that month and break them down to smaller goals to work with week by week. This way the BIG picture doesn't seem so big.

    2. Join Spark teams. There are tons of teams here and you will be able to find ones that fit to what you like or want in a team.

    The key to success here is to be active and you've already started by joining. You will find that everyone is willing to help you out if you need it.
