Hi, I'm Kathy. I have been a member of the SparkPeople community for 3 years now and have lost 40 pounds so far. I enjoy my daily visits to SparkPeople and have made so many great friends. I have found the support and encouragement on this site to be stronger than anything I have ever experienced before.

While I have not met my overall weight goal for 2017, I have increased my muscle mass while decreasing my body fat. My challenge for 2018 is to continue working toward increased strength and decreased body fat while also loosing some weight. I have joined the Winter 5% Challenge to help with motivation and accountability. This will be my 7th challenge and my 4th time with the Teddy Bear team. I find that especially during the winter months it is easy to get distracted from my exercise program. Being part of a team is that extra push I need to stay on track.

My exercise plan includes:

- Walking Daisy every morning that the weather permits (it must be above 10 "feels like" degrees.

- yoga or general stretching every morning

- going to the gym 3 x/week for a cardio warm up of 15 minutes followed by strength training up to 60 minutes. This winter I am adding a Pilates Reformer class once a week.

- 15 minutes on the stationary bike 5x/week plus HIIT walking on the treadmill on days Daisy and I can't walk

- on non-gym days, add one video exercise tape either from Spark Videos or from the FitFusion site.

I will plan healthy meals a week in advance using non-processed foods and buying organic whenever possible. I want to try a new recipe every other week and also include fish in my meals once a week. I am also learning to balance my nutritional needs to what my body seems to need.

My Goals:
#1 - Cook healthier foods and enjoy the process.

#2 - Build strength in my arms and legs so I can go hiking and kayaking next summer.

#3 - Target weight goal for the first quarter of 2018 is to loose 8 pounds. If I can continue that throughout the year, I will be at my goal weight by the end of 2018.

#4 - Do a deep cleaning and de-cluttering of each room in my home, focusing on one room per month.

My Program:
Daisy and I will walk every chance we can - I live in Minnesota where the snow, ice, freezing temps and wind chill make an outdoor walk sometimes just not safe. I will work at being more deliberate and consistent with my diet and exercise program. I am making the commitment to take classes at Lifetime Fitness 3 times each week: my favorites are Life Barre, Simply Strength, Pilates, and Root Yoga. I do, however, want to try out a new class each month during this first quarter of 2018 - beginning with F.I.T. which is a cardio / strength combination.

Personal Information:
I live in Champlin, MN and am the mother of 5 adult children; 3 girls and twin boys. I also have 1 step son and together we have 5 grandchildren. I have been married to my second husband, Tom, for 22 years and he has been a great support to me as I follow this weight loss journey.

Then there's my Best Friend Daisy - a spunky little Cocker Spaniel / Golden Retriever mix who keeps me on my toes . We also have Sheba, the last surviving cat of 4 that I inherited when my mother passed away.

Other Information:
I love to knit but have cut back on that in order to be more active. I've tried knitting while walking on the treadmill but it doesn't work very well. I have gotten more and more interested in reading rather than watching TV, which was my previous quiet activity. In 2017 I have read 28 of my goal of 30 books per year - in 2018 I'd like to increase that to 36 books. My son has published three historical fiction books about the Minnesota/Dakota Indian uprisings in the mid-1800's, reading all three is on my bucket list (History is not my passion). In August I had the trip of my life - my youngest son (by 19 minutes) took me to Norway for 12 days and it was the most amazing experience I've ever had. We even met some distant relatives and were welcomed like family! Right now I'm working hard on trying to put together a good record of our family history to pass on to my children - who don't really care right now but I'm quite sure they will care one day! I also love to read anyt

Happy Sunday dear Kathy! A beautiful day in FL today. We ventured out to do some yard work. All of my orchids are just bursting to bloom...that makes me SO happy! I hope your day was good and the weather let you get outside to enjoy it with Daisy Doodle!

You helped inspire me. When I read about you trying different classes and being so consistent working out it gets me motivated. How wonderful that your insurance covers the gym. That's the way it should be! Exercise is so vital to mental and physical health and it is the ideal preventative medicine which in the long run saves the insurance company money. Zumba is amazing with the right instructor and music! I find I have to figure out what my knees, etc can handle and work my way up, especially if the instructor uses lots of jumps and kicks. I have a huge smile on my face most of the time during a good Zumba class and it's such a great total body workout.

OH heavens. I know I wasn't @ my best after surgery, but like you say, I think now I know what to anticipate. NOT that the recuperation is any better, just no fear of the unknown cuz we've BTDT!

Good luck. Still waiting an appointment for consult. Oh well.
