MommaGini's Weight Loss Journey

I'm mother to two boys 10 years apart (youngest turned 18 in 2012). I've always struggled with my weight, and I am determined to get it under control!

In December 2007 I started a medically supervised Very Low Calorie weight loss program. It worked very well, but after losing 50 lbs in just over a year I let life get in the way and gained it all back. Two big things I am keeping from that experience are (1) I can be persistent enough to get this weight off! and (2) after having ...

It worked very well, but after losing 50 lbs in just over a year I let life get in the way and gained it all back. Two big things I am keeping from that experience are (1) I can be persistent enough to get this weight off! and (2) after having my body-fat percentage measured I learned I had set my goal weight far too low - I have 138 lbs of lean body mass (Apparently there's a lot of muscle and some pretty dense bone under the fat!) so I shouldn't go as low as the charts say. I'm adjusting my goal to 165, and WILL get there and STAY THERE!

My Goals:
OK, so I reversed all the progress I made in 2008. Here we go again:

First target - down to 205 by my Dr appointment 11/15/2010

OK, blew that one AGES ago, restarting in February 2013. Weighed 243 a few days before my doctor's appointment, going back in four months. Aiming for 205 (an ambitious 2 pounds per week) by the next appointment.

My Program:
Low calorie, high protein:

Calories 1,000 to 1,500/day
Protein, fat, and carbs about evenly distributed (1/3 of each day's calories from each)

Carbs mainly from veggies
a little fruit is OK
MINIMIZE bread, pasta, cake etc.

Personal Information:
I'm in Northeastern Massachusetts, in the "Greater Lowell" area. Separated since 2004 and working, I like to go places with friends and live an active lifestyle.

Other Information:
In late 2009 I decided it was time to start dating again! It sure is fun getting out there again, but eating healthy can be a challenge on a date. Salad entrees are great but not always appropriate, and eating only half the meal sometimes doesn't go over too well...

I am so glad you are back! I have not been as consistent as I would have liked since 4/10/13, but I have definitely improved. Reading lots of Sparkpeople articles and blogs have really helped, along with connections with people like you.

I have made strides in increasing exercise, and my big problem with nutrition is that I keep having/giving parties and and having overnight guests and the idea that I must treat them specially is getting in my way of controlling my own calories. I never thought about it before, but I am going to have to improve my guests' nutrition so i can improve my own. Any ideas would be welcome.

Again, so glad you're here!

Congratulations on your 17 minute mile! I'm bumping up my exercise too. I know that's the way to for for me also.

I am glad to know that you are a Dr. Seuss fan too! I discovered recently that he also did political cartoons, largely during World War II. His style is unmistakable there, as well as in his children's books.

I am like you, I have traveled the ups and downs of weight loss, and now with the help of Sparkpeople and its community, I expect to mostly travel DOWN - in weight loss, of course. Let's hang in there together! emoticon
