Hi all! I'm a Southern girl whose bad habits & diet are starting to take their toll on my health. I'm only 30, and I want to be around for many, many more years. So I'm making a commitment to start improving my health now while my body is still able to easily repair and heal itself.

Risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, colon cancer, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are a reality in my family. I am currently watching an aunt with type 1 diabetes suffer and waste away while dealing with huge medical bills and too many meds to take per day. I don't want that for my life, and I don't want to be a burden (financially or otherwise) on my family. My fiance and I will not be able to consider having children until about 7.5 years or so from now. That would make me nearly 38. With later pregnancies increasing the risk of breast cancer and other issues, I want to be in the best health possible if we do decide to have children.

My hope with SparkPeople is to reach out to others who are trying to make positive changes in their lifestyles. it will probably be easier and more fun meeting other like-minded individuals along the way. So here I am! If you're serious about taking charge of your health like I am and you keep your focus on the positive side of things, I hope we'll get to meet and become friends!

Fitness Minutes: 9,887

My Goals:
My ultimate goal is to lose weight, not necessarily because of looks but to improve my health. I have 62.5 lbs to lose, and I'd like to do it by May of 2014!

I have not been diagnosed with any chronic illnesses yet, but feel that I am at least in the pre-diabetes range and feel that I likely have high cholesterol (though my blood pressure isn't particularly high). I want to move myself safely out of any pre-chronic-illness ranges so that I don't have to live a life where I'm bound to medications and chemical treatments just to mimic a healthy state.


My Program:
I am doing 6 main things to reach these goals. First, I have begun a semi-nutritarian lifestyle. I juice monthly and am focused on reducing the animal products I take in while increasing the high-nutrient veggies and low-sugar fruits I consume.

2. I exercise for an hour at least 4 days per week. 2 days are high-impact cardio (speed-walking via the treadmill) and the other 2 days are strength training and Pilates infused with cardio.

3. I have learned that my body operates best on 9.5 hours of sleep. So I have begun focusing on making sure I get at least 9 hours of sleep each night.

4. I have mostly removed sodas, alcohol, caffeinated teas and sugary juices from my diet. I will enjoy a soda occasionally if I'm out and about with friends, but I drink water, V8, oat-based protein shakes or my juiced veggies exclusively at home.

I am trying not to focus on weight as a number. That causes you to get too caught up in the wrong thing. Instead, I am focusing
