Life Changes

I'm 64 years old and a few months ago I realized that I was allowing poor health to take over my life. My weight had reached an all time high of 206 pounds, I was anemic, had diabetes and was using an insulin pump to control the disease, had suffered from high BP since I was in my 20's (and skinny), have Rheumatoid Arthritis for which I have had many courses of prednisone, and of course high cholesterol. I was so short of breath I could hardly make it up and down the stairs and walking around the house or the yard was the extent of my exercise.

I am the mother of four and the grandmother of 14 and I found myself totally unable to participate in family activities. I prayed about the situation and then decide to once again try dieting. At the time I was using another internet site to keep track of food intake, etc. Then a friend recommended Spark to me.

In the past four months I have lost 30 pounds and am nearly halfway to my goal. I no longer need the insulin pump and am controlling my diabetes with diet and exercise. My BP is pretty much normal without meds and my energy level is high enough that I suspect the longstanding anemia might be resolving. I have actually put off seeing my Doctor for another month instead of going in for my usual three month check up because I want to solidify my improvements before he suggests starting me on oral diabetes meds.

I am a Nurse Practioner and am monitoring my blood pressure and blood sugars very regularly so will know if I need to go back on meds. I feel that after four months I am well on my way to making some significant life changes

Two years ago this week I went into the hospital with severe abdominal pain; I was scheduled for kidney stone removal and that changed my life forever. I woke up in Intensive care on a ventilator in multi system failure and totally deaf. Since then I have gradually reclaimed my life with learnig to become mobile again, to live with CKD after spending months on dialysis, had a cochlear implant in one ear and the other ear improved enough to use a very strong hearing aid. After having to use prednisone as the only option left for arthritis (with kidney disease you can't use other antiinflammatories) I am once agan struggling with diabetes and will attempt to regain control once again with use of diet and exercise. So far I seem to be succeeding!

My Goals:
Enter a summary of your goals, or just a few you would like to share.

Today I met my long term goal which makes a 56 pound weight loss! I have also reversed my diabetes and found ways to work with my deafness, i e a cochlear implant and the best hearing aid I could find.
I am much more physically active with many projects going such as my current one of building a rose garden. I saw my kidney doctor yesterday and he was pleased with my weight loss of 15 pounds in the past 4 months. If my lab work is stable I won't see him again after the next visit for 6 months. I am well on my way to regaining the life that bad health and extra weight took away from me!

Lose another 10 pounds; then take it from there as to whether I want to lose more

Control Diabetes without medications if possible

Reverse Anemia ; prpbably no longer possible with the CKD

Become more active physically

Reclaim a life I have lost to illness and deafness!

My Program:
Give an overview of what you are doing to meet your goals.

Keeping track of intake daily, if not on this site then on "My Plate"

Keeping track of weight loss

Checking Blood Sugars six times/day just as I was with the Insulin pump

Check my BP twice a week

Incorporate at least one hour of calorie burning activity into my daily program.

Wow Millifred you are truly inspirational. I have been struggling to lose my weight for a few years now and am back at my highest. Was also using another site which worked for awhile, but needed to change I think in order to succeed. Thanks for your story. Will strive to live up to your example. emoticon

Millifred..as you know, having diabetes and a a lifelong weight problem can play havoc with your life. I am so excited to hear that you were on a pump, and meds and you were able to find a successful way to get off of all of it. I would love to hear from you and have you tell me what your life was like before and what changes you made in your life to free you from the bondage. Please feel free to email me at my personal email, pat85014@cox.net. I anxiously await your response. Thanks
