Life Is About Creating Yourself

I've been out of work for over a year and gained back all the weight I lost before plus 10 pounds or so. At first I think I was a bit depressed and ate to stuff the emotions. I didn't track my eating, and I started sitting a lot at home (next to my husband, who works from home and sits a lot as well) and not exercising even though I have lots of time to exercise. All of those behaviors became habits, and I'm still doing them. Most of my clothes don't fit, and the ones that do don't fit ...

All of those behaviors became habits, and I'm still doing them. Most of my clothes don't fit, and the ones that do don't fit well. I've just been having trouble getting back on track. I feel ashamed that I let myself backslide so far, so I've been reading articles and tracking my exercise (when I do it) on SP but not participating in any of my SparkTeams and not blogging. I won't say I'm 100% back yet, but I thought updating my SparkPage would be a start.

The principle is competing against yourself. Itís about self-improvement, about being better than you were the day before. -- Steve Young

Here are some of my reasons for wanting to lose weight:

1. I want to fit into seats better -- at movie theaters, on airplanes, at amusement parks...
2. I hate shopping in the "Plus" size sections of the store. The selection there is usually terrible.
3. I do not want my knee pains and occasional back pains to turn into something more serious.
4. I'd like to have more energy.
5. I want my clothes to fit again.
6. I want to feel better about myself.

Quotes that Inspire Me:

The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone elseís highlight reel. - Steven Furtick

Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
-- George Bernard Shaw

One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.
- Lucille Ball

Our doubts are traitors,
And make us lose the good we oft might win,
By fearing to attempt.
-- William Shakespeare

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
-- Maria Robinson

To insure good health: Eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life.
-- William Londen

Finish each day
And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and
Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.
-Herm Albright

There are always flowers for those who want to see them.
-- Henri Matisse

Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.
-- Anthony Robbins

The more you have, the more youíre occupied; the less you have, the more free you are. -- Mother Teresa
(This one is good for me because I am working on decluttering.)

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things only hoped for. -- Epicurus

If what you are doing is worth doing, hang in there until it is done.
-- Nido Qubein

FEAR = False Evidence Appearing Real
- Hill Harper? (Not sure if he got this one from someone else or not.)

"I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself. I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me. However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me. I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay."

--Virginia Satir

TEN THOUGHTS TO LIVE BY:

1. Thou shalt not worry, for worry is the most unproductive of all human activities.

2. Thou shalt not be fearful, for most of the things we fear never come to pass.

3. Thou shalt not cross bridges before you come to them, for no one yet has succeeded in accomplishing this.

4. Thou shalt face each problem as it comes; you can only handle one at a time anyway.

5. Thou shalt not take problems to bed with you, for they make very poor bedfellows.

6. Thou shalt not borrow other peoples' problems. They can better care for them than you can.

7. Thou shalt not try to relive yesterday for good or ill, for it is forever gone. Concentrate on what is happening in your life and be happy now.

8. Thou shalt be a good listener, for only when you listen do you hear ideas different from your own. It is hard to learn something new when you are talking, and some people do know more than you do.

9. Thou shalt not become bogged down by frustration, for 90 percent of it is rooted in self-pity and will only interfere with positive action.

10. Thou shalt count thy blessings, never overlooking the small ones -- for a lot of small blessings add up to a big one!

My Goals:
I would like to be a healthy weight and not obese or overweight.

I would like to strengthen my core so that my back and knees do not hurt.

I would like to be physically fit enough to hike down into the Grand Canyon someday ... and back up again (the next day).

I would like to fit in my clothes again.

My Program:
1. Monitoring my caloric intake, trying to make sure I get enough fiber and calcium each day.

2. Watching the patterns in how my calories are spread over carbs, protein, and fat. I have noticed that I should actually eat more fat and protein and less carbs in general.

3. Making a conscious effort to eat more fruits and vegetables (vegetables in particular because I don't like them as well as I like fruit).

4. Exercising more by taking the stairs, walking to events/locations in the neighborhood that I need to go to, riding the stationary recumbent bike occasionally, working out using EA Sports Active and Wii Fit Plus on the Wii, trying out SparkPeople videos on YouTube and DVD, and participating in challenges (like SP bootcamps).

Personal Information:
I live in Southern California and work as a systems engineer. I married an wonderful man on 8/8/2009 and two sons, ages 21 and 13. My younger son is involved in Boy Scouts and church youth group, and I drive him to activities and occasionally volunteer with those groups.

Other Information:
I love looking at the stars and learning about space. I have a goal to get a job supporting astronomy and space exploration.

I like to read fantasy and science fiction, humorous books, and self-improvement books (including diet and health books). I like to watch movies, almost any genre except horror, although I gravitate to comedies, sci-fi, and fantasy. I really want to travel, but wonder if I'll have to wait until the boys grow up to have the time and money. I'd like to see Australia, the Pyramids, England, Italy, France, Spain ... there are so many cool places to go!

Thanks so much for commenting on my blog. I don't really know anyone in Arlington yet and my motivation comes from inside and my friends on Spark. I am so grateful to have all of you!

Glad to see you were on SP today. Just take steps you are comfortable with. Even baby steps mean you are moving forward. You can always track your food later when you are ready. emoticon We did it before and we can do it again!

emoticon emoticon to Positive Sparkers KSGROTHE. I feel your frustration with the working situation and not getting the exercise you know you need. Being positive can help with that obviously. Hope to see you on the boards. Keep looking up at those stars!

emoticon Happy Belated Birthday, DONE GIRL emoticon

The Scorpio child is born to a father who didn't want a child for whatever reason, which may never have been discussed in the home, but the sensitive little Scorpio picks up on this and learns not to trust others. She asks "What do they want from me and what is in this for me?" Scorpio is a good sign for a woman to be since it is "fixed" water, making her very emotional, but in our culture a woman is allowed to be emotional. She can be very jealous, even of siblings when she feels she has been slighted. Scorpio being a "fixed" sign can stay with and finish what she starts but she also has a very difficult time trying to change. She can certainly have a weight problem as her emotions get the best of her. But, she can exercise and stay with a routine, so her weight issue is ALL up to her and no one else. What she is is all of her own making. She lives a life of extremes and is never center-field on any issue. She makes up her mind quickly and stays with her decision or feelings on an issue.
She gets along with Virgo, Taurus, Pisces, Capricorn and Cancer. She should avoid Sagittarius as he will be to blunt for her although she can be very sarcastic when she wants to be. It is her way of protecting herself and getting out her "sting."
She makes a good detective or policewoman.
Scorpio must be in control of any relationship she is in, as this goes back to her feeling unsure as a child.
The Scorpio woman is often the "breadwinner" in the family, or she supports others such as a parent or "down on his luck" relative.
No matter how successful Scorpio is in life, she always feels her life is a struggle. It is never easy for her from her point of view. She feels the world is against her in some way. Again, this goes back to her childhood.

Like the other water signs, this sign is very sensitive and emotional. With Scorpio, unlike the water signs Cancer and Pisces, the emotions remain under rigid control. They may not even be apparent to those who are very close to you. When your emotions do erupt, they do so very violently, often with a strong burst of sarcasm and vindictiveness.
The strength of Scorpio is in the methods employed to meet every challenge. You approach everything with intensity and passion. Nothing is ever halfway because you put everything you have in your work; mind, heart, soul. You are one of those people who always gives 100% and sometimes more. Many born under the sign Scorpio become classic workaholics.
You may have an undesirable trait commonly found in the Scorpio person, holding a grudge for a very long time. The underside of Scorpio is often possessed with uncontrollable jealousies and the strongest passions. When offended the reaction is surely revenge. The higher side of Scorpio still dominates people and situations, but with much for the common good. This sign produces very few lukewarm people. You are either very bad or very good.
In Scorpio, the Sun is intense, skeptical and secretive. There is an intensity and a secretiveness in your makeup which results in an inscrutable persona most people cannot penetrate. This trait makes the Scorpio personality hard to detect. You like to remain incognito, and do so with your very secretive nature. You are a master at hiding your emotions. You neither flinch nor blush. It's hard for you to share your inner feelings with anyone.

You can be very critical and demanding, creating a forceful and dominating demeanor. You are strong-willed and determined, and you usually act with incisiveness. Your critical nature allows you to make shrewd and unusually accurate judgments at a rapid rate. You can penetrate the hidden agenda of those you meet. It is in your nature to protect yourself by knowing what your opponents are thinking and doing. You have uncanny intuition and accurate perceptions, making you almost psychic in understanding and making emotional connections with other people. Very few successfully earn your trust. Often, you experience difficulties with the authority figures in your life.
At home, you may be something of a tyrant, wanting everything done your way. You think you are always right and won't tolerate dissent. There is a tendency for you to impose your will on friends and family since you feel so passionately that your ideas are in their best interest. No one takes relationships more serious than you. Although you are highly attracted to, and attractive to, the opposite sex, in many respects you function well as a 'lone wolf' type.
