Put the ham bone in your crock pot, cover with water and allow it to cook all day. Strain out all the ham, shred the meat and remove bone, gristle, etc. Return the meat to the broth along with a pound of beans, chopped onion and carrot, salt and pepper and just a pinch of red pepper flake. This is going to sound weird but I just wanted you to know....I saw your post on the "winter time motivator'' and saw that you like to run, walk, ect.. and can't wait for spring! I too love the outdoors and my husband and I actually live in a 5th wheel camper on the lake.... so I clicked on your page and was reading about your family. Then I read about your 19 yr old son.....
