Gettin' Healthier...One Step at a Time!

My first introduction text started like this,

"So the freshman 15 turned into the sophomore 20 and then into the junior...well, we just won't say, will we? haha! I'm about to start my senior year of college and want to finish strong, by actually losing weight this go round!"

Here I am a year and a half later having lost some weight, gained some, lost, gained...etc. I'm 30-40 pounds heavier than I was when I first wrote that introduction. Boy, have I got some curves ...

The fact of the matter is by any standards I'm borderline obese and its time for me to get serious. But obviously, all the methods I used before didn't work.

Checking the scale once a week only depressed me and made me feel negative even if the weight gain was probably only added muscle mass. Working out for hours on end every day just wore me out and left me starving. Depriving myself of my very favorite things just led me to binges and more weight gain.

The fact of the matter is weight loss needs to be healthy and I haven't done it the healthy way before.

All these weight loss commercials focus on how negative we feel about our bodies. The scale itself taunts us if we don't make any progress and devastates us when we gain an ounce of weight. I'm going to do things differently this time.

I've already started by substituting vegetables and fruit where normally there would be french fries or onion rings. I've made a point of getting out and walking for even just a little bit every day. AND the big one, I'm trying to cook rather than eat out all the time.

These are all little steps that I'm taking in my bigger journey to healthy living.

I'm not there yet, but I will be.

My Goals:
* The big goal is to QUIT SODA. I've been addicted for so many years and its horrible to my stomach and to my waistline. ***UPDATE 8/27/12 I've mostly quit soda! I rarely have more than 1 in a week. One of my biggest hurdles has been crossed!
* I want to get back into size 8 pants (from 14)
* I want to be able to run 5 miles

My Program:
My current mantra is, "Substitution, not deprivation!"

As for exercise, I'm trying to get a good balance of cardio and strength training. Strength training is vital right now because I'm nursing a knee injury because of weak hips. Every bit of strength training brings me closer to a pain free lifestyle!
***UPDATE 8/27/12
I hardly ever worry about my knee or hips anymore. Exercising keeps my joints moving pain free.

Personal Information:
Living in Raleigh, NC with big dreams of moving out west to Colorado! I'm a financial services officer with a credit union and am working on paying off those student loans and getting financially healthy while getting physically healthy.
