Getting healthy - 2009/2010

Update 1/4/09. The last few months have been killer for me. I stopped going to the gym, stopped tracking my foods, and basically gave myself 3 "free" months to do what I wanted. Not good for the progress I made! I was inching so close to my goal, but now I know I have gained back at least 6-9lbs, I just haven't dared to step on the scale yet. However, it is on my agenda to do this week (as scared as I am!) and will accurately update my weight on my tracker :(..... Good news is that I am ...

Not good for the progress I made! I was inching so close to my goal, but now I know I have gained back at least 6-9lbs, I just haven't dared to step on the scale yet. However, it is on my agenda to do this week (as scared as I am!) and will accurately update my weight on my tracker :(..... Good news is that I am focused and ready to get back on the exercise track and entering all of my food. Kind of starting from square one, but at least I already know I can do it....if I don't sabatoge myself in the process again.... Wish me luck!

I've always enjoyed exercise, but motivation is my killer. I used to use the treadmill faithfully at home until our lower level flooded last year in the Iowa floods. Then....I just stopped. I joined a gym in 4/09 and love going as much as I can. I enjoy eating food, going out with friends, and enjoying the food & drink in life, so exercise helps balance things.

I've never kept track of a calorie until I joined SP. My weight has fluctuated 20lbs up and down all of my life, but I could usually tweak little things and keep it relatively stable for periods at a time. I gained 65 pounds with my pregnancy 5 years ago - took most of it off after 2 years, and then gained about 15 pounds in the past year. I finally had a realization that I am getting older and need to start being CONSCIOUS about my health instead of just ignoring it. I spent the first few weeks on SP just tracking my food without changing my diet and I realized that my typical food intake was a good 3000 calories a day - and that's probably what it's been for a long time. I've made some great changes since then (although some days I still hit 2400 calories, especially if I go out for the weekend with friends) but I am able to get on track. I feel more empowered now - knowing the value of what I put in my mouth. I still enjoy my junk food, but more sensibly!

My Goals:
Lose 22 pounds by the end of the year.

Drink more water.

Get more sleep.

Exercise 3-4 x/week

My Program:
Yoga: 1-2 x/ week

Cardio - 2-3 x/week

xtra strength training (besides yoga) - 1-2 x/ week

Personal Information:
My name is Jill -Married with one child (age 5). I'm a social worker in central Iowa. I'm currently hating Iowa weather, just in case anyone wondered!

Other Information:
I can't freaking believe how many calories I consume in one day. I have always been able to eat a lot of crap and maintain an average weight, but now that I have started tracking what I eat, well.... it's about double than what I should be. I can't imagine the shape I could be in if I just ate better and exercised. We'll see..... :)

Ok, that is too weird-I'm currently the developmental disability specialist for the region for child protective services. I work with the kids we are involved with who have intellectual disabilities! I've been here for 9 years and have done a couple of other positions here, but this is my favorite. I have worked for the psych hospital here for a short time, done case management at a place for juveniles placed out of their home, and also worked in the group homes here, where I met my husband when he worked there also, back in 1997!

How cool to "meet" a fellow Iowan, fellow parent of a special child, and a fellow social worker!!! What do you do for a living?

Your little girl is so cute! and I grew up in Monticello, Iowa, so it's fun to see a fellow Iowan on here (although I am displaced in Texas now!)
