My Continuing Health Journey

I've been a vegetarian for about 15 years. I became a vegan about five years ago, after reading John Robbins' "The Food Revolution".

My nutritional philosophy is nutritarian eating (described in Joel Fuhrman's book "Eat to Live"). It's a high-nutrient approach to eating (basically, get the most nutrients possible per calorie). I've read many books on nutrition, but this one is the best - supported by research, sensible, and actually easy to follow once you get the hang of it. ...

Since embracing a largely nutritarian diet, I almost never get sick. In the past 5 years, I had a minor cold that lasted about 3 days and that's it. I don't need a flu shot - I have fruits and veggies! Our diets really do have an amazing impact on our health. We have much more control of our health destiny than we think.

For fitness, I typically do DVDs at home. I've done Insanity (twice), P90X (twice), The New Rules of Lifting for Women, and Cathe Friedrich's Shock Straining System (STS) program. I also love taking walks with my husband. Very soon, I'm planning on starting P90X2.

Right now I'm close to the the heaviest I've ever been in my life, but I'm also probably the most physically fit in terms of strength and cardiovascular fitness. I've been eating a healthy base diet, but supplementing with too many extra calories (like peanut butter and whole wheat tortillas, and take-out Thai and Chinese).

One thing I've learned and try to remember is to to not compare oneself to others. We all have different body types, metabolisms, abilities, etc. Instead, focus on the changes in your own body and health. You are improving yourself EVERY time you eat healthfully and exercise, even if the changes aren't immediately obvious.

Good luck to everybody on your individual fitness and health journeys!

"Beautiful Woman Award! Once you've been given this award, you have to paste it on the wall of 8 women who deserve it. If you receive more than 3, you know you're really beautiful! If you break the chain, nothing will happen, but it's always good to know someone thinks you're beautiful inside and out"
