Unwrapping the layers...one day at a time

I first joined Spark!people a few years ago... at first I was all fired up and ready to go... until I quit. I didn't unsubscribe from Spark! but for a while i just gave up on the idea of having a BMI less than 25.

What happened to change my thinking? I watched a close friend change her lifestyle and reduce her weight in the space of a year. And the realization that I've spent most of my life battling my weight issues and it was past time to bring this issue to an end.

What happened to change my thinking? I watched a close friend change her lifestyle and reduce her weight in the space of a year. And the realization that I've spent most of my life battling my weight issues and it was past time to bring this issue to an end.

So I started to believe again. And I made a resolution that this year (2010) I would make significant changes in my lifestyle and habits in order to bring my weight under control.

So far, the weight loss hasn't been as quick as I'd like, but its giving me time to adjust my thinking and habits to suit the new lifestyle that I want for myself.

I'm still here!

I went offline for a long while ... Gained more weight, which led to blood sugar and blood pressure issues. Became so sedentary and unfit that even getting out of a chair left me panting for breath.

Following a medical check-up at the beginning of the year, it finally dawned on me how much stress I was putting on my body with my poor lifestyle habits. I now have to take medication for my BP and BG and it saddens me to know that my poor choices led me to this.
The good news is: I can get better by making better choices. I can forgive myself, learn from the mistakes of the past and move forward. So, in January 2013 that is what I decided to do.

It's almost four months since I began and even though the journey has been full of ups and downs, I've been making progress in the right direction. I started attending yoga class 3x/ week. Most mornings (except Sunday) I do some form of aerobic exercise (elliptical / stationary bike / walk). Where I previously skipped breakfast most mornings, I now eat breakfast everyday. I am more conscious about what I eat and why. I'm learning to plan meals in advance, especially when traveling.

I haven't been perfect. Some days I don't exercise, either by accident or design LOL. There are times when I don't want to exercise and I have to force myself. Other days I eat more than planned, or indulge heavily in junk food. I am learning to forget the "all or nothing" approach and forgive myself when I fall by the wayside. Then get up and move forward.

I was afraid to weigh myself at the beginning of the year. My current weight is 297 lbs. I shall use it as my start weight on my tracker and work my way down. The ideal weight for my frame and height is between 140 and 160 lbs. However, given the amount of weight I have to lose, I have two intermediate goal weights, and my first goal weight is 250 lbs.

My Goals:
I put up the picture of the bellydancer because I love to dance, but I'm too self-conscious about my weight now, and too fat to do it with any grace.

I really look orward to being able to bellydance again and hope to start praticing when i get more limber.

My Program:
For now, I just want to increase my fitness from 'sedentary' to 'active'. I've got a pedometer to count the number of steps everyday, and am working on increasing my daily activity (taking the stairs, parking further away, e.t.c.)

Other Information:
I love to read and have been doing so since i was a little girl. One of my favorite genres is fantasy fiction, such as the 'Sword of Truth' series by Terry Goodkind, and the 'Wheel of Time' series by Robert Jordan
